## Class 8’s learning journeyAutumn 1

### Literacy

For our first literacy unit this half term we delved into a picture book called ‘The Flood’. This book provoked imaginative discussions around the characters and how the author has chosen to portray them. Our outcome was to write a diary entry from the point of view of a child.

During this unit we focussed on gathering vocabulary, using fronted adverbials, using the first person in our writing and expanding our knowledge of conjunctions.

### Maths

This half term in maths we have explored place value, the four operation and fractions. Some of us delved deeper into each concept by exploring more complex reasoning style questions. We have also been practising our arithmetic skills and we have continued with our times tables. We have had some excellent scores on TTRockstars, well done to everyone for their participation!

### Topic - Avert the Diasaster

In this topic we were hooked into our learning by looking at images of different natural disasters and the devastation they left behind. Then we looked closer at earthquakes and how these occur focussing on physical geography. We researched the impact that Earthquakes have and studied the SAN Andreas Fault in California.

### P.H.S.E

This half term in PHSE we have been learning about how to lead a healthy lifestyle. We learnt all about different elements of health including fitness, diet, sleep and meditation. We learnt about the benefits of these and why they are important to everyday life.

We also looked at feelings. The children discussed what happens when we feel sad and ways to deal with sadness. We also explored what makes a good friend. We had some fantastic discussions around this!

### Next half term...

Our topic next half term will have a focus around history. We will be exploring the topic 'Life in the Mines’ and we will look closely at the history of coal mines, particularly in South Yorkshire.

In Maths, we will be continuing with fractions, decimals and percentages. We will also look at measures, geometry, statistics, position and direction. We will also re-cap the four operations.

### Have a happy half term everyone!
