Castell Y Gwynt Castle of the Winds - A Welsh Adventure

A straight forward plan for a nice little Welsh adventure

  • Get up at 4am
  • Drive to Ogwen cottage
  • Climb Y-Gribin ridge
  • Do some sunrise photography
  • Walk via Castle of the Winds to the cantilever stone
  • Walk back down to Tryfan and back down to the car at Ogwen Cottage
  • Take photo's on the way, have fun
Making sure were all clear on the route

As we drove up the Ogwen valley the sky was largely clear with a nearly full moon lighting the rocks in that soft gentle silver moonlight I could have stayed at the road and photographed until sunrise but that wasn't the mission.

we set off into the darkness
and climbed by the light of the moon
with a clear sky the light came fast

The clear sky lit up pink as the sun rose, lots of low cloud hanging in the valley would soon burn off

Too soon the sun clears the horizon

Giving stunning views over the landscape and low clouds

The warm first light catches the summits before flooding into the valleys

We pack up and walk off to the Castell Y Gwynt, what an amazing alien landscape we clamber over boulders and when we get there Dave and Ian climb to the top while I take photos from various angles

Taking in the view from the top of the Castell Y Gwynt

The scale of the landscape is huge and the views equally impressive

Dave and Ian leave the Castell Y Gwynt

After taking the photos we head off towards the Cantilever stone

Posing on the Cantilever stone
The walk down is tough on a steep loose scree slope but we take our time and get down without incident
Taking a rest before the last couple of miles
The last mile is the longest

Onwards back to the car park after a great adventure, some great light and lots of fun and fresh air

The route

Castell y Gwynt is a top of Glyder Fach in Snowdonia, north-west Wales. It has the merit of being the only 3000 ft Welsh summit classed as only a Nuttall, hence it is not included in the Welsh 3000's

  • Elevation: 972 m
  • Prominence: 16 m
  • Mountain range: Glyderau
