The first Monday of May is the day that fashion gurus anticipate each year. This event is known as The Met Gala. Each year, this fundraising gala is held to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art's (The Met) Costume Institute in New York City. The annual gala is hosted by Editor in Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour.

The exclusive gala is held at the Met, where many A-list celebrities attend by invitation only. A theme is assigned to the gala which is also the theme for the annual Costume Institute exhibition in the museum. This years theme was “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.”

Rei Kawakubo is a Japanese fashion designer who founded the brand Comme des Garçons. Comme des Garçons can be easily identified with its iconic logo of a red heart with two eyes.

Many celebrities stayed true to the theme, while others ventured off and chose a more simplistic look. Here is a look at our top three picks of the night.

From left to right: Cara Delevingne in a silver Chanel pant suit, Rihanna in an intricate Comme Des Garcons dress, and Gisele Bündchen in a backless Stella McCartney dress.

#3 Best Outfit: Gisele Bündchen - Bündchen always catches everyone's eye as her beauty shines throughout her. She has often been referred to as best dressed at Met Galas in past years. She sticks to the theme each year, usually arriving in a skin-tight gown. This year she kept it simple, wearing a silver embroidered long sleeve dress with a very deep cutout in the back and a train to follow her. Her super bowl winning husband, Tom Brady coordinated in silver tuxedo. The pair have always been known for wearing coordinating outfits.

#2 Best Outfit: Cara Delevingne - Delevingne was best known at the gala for bedazzling and painting her newly shaved head silver. While some others decided to stay mellow and simple, Delevingne went all the way to match the theme of the gala. Her makeup artist, Romy Soleimani told People Magazine that the painting Delevingne’s head silver rooted from old Commes des Garçons head shapes from the ‘90s. The silver hair was perfectly matched with her sparkling pant suit.

#1 Best Outfit: Rihanna - Rihanna’s was expected to show up in a bold outfit after her 2015 appearance stole the show. “Rihanna completely changed the game,” Avery Smith ’19 said. “Her abstract outfits represent her own take on a relatively broad topic.”

A side by side comparison: Rihanna's 2015 and 2017 looks

Rihanna tops the charts for the best outfit at the Met Gala 2017. Her dress represented a full look from Comme des Garcons fall 2016 collection. Her dress was covered head to toe in pop-out flowers along with thigh high lace up red heels. Rihanna’s outfit was a showstopper and was even declared best dressed by singer Lady Gaga. “Best dressed in my humble opinion was Rihanna. [She] captured the spirit of the night and emotion of #Kawakubo #CommeDesGarcons,” Gaga said.

Overall, the night consisted of outfits that will be remembered forever. The Met Gala lets celebrities experiment with new and different fashion statements that can inspire people everywhere.

Now the wait is on until May 1, 2018.
