"Breakthrough results come by a series of good decisions, diligently executed and accumulated on top of one another" (Collins).

A&P and Kroger

  • Kroger changed their strategy by facing the facts
  • A&P kept their strategy
  • Kroger became the number one in America
You need to infuse your decision making process with the brutal facts of reality
  • Determine the truth
  • Good decisions can become self-evident
  • Recognize if change is needed
Pursue a path to greatness by refining the path with brutal facts
  • Do not live in complacency
  • Pitney Bowles- allowed for employees to speak to executives
  • Be wary of strong personalities
  • Winston Churchill and the Statistical Office

There are four basic practices for truth to be heard:

  1. Lead with questions, not answers. Be humble.
  2. Engage in dialogue and debate, not coercion
  3. Conduct autopsies without blame. Ex. Phillip Morris and 7-Up
  4. Build "Red Flag" Mechanisms
Confronting the Brutal Facts leads to stronger and more resilient leaders

The Stockade Paradox:

Faith to prevail regardless of difficulties and at the same time confront the most brutal facts of your current reality

Never let one side retain the other. Be aware of difficulties, and have the faith to prevail
