District Plans Year-Long Celebration of 125th Anniversary
HARRISBURG, SD - The fastest growing school district in South Dakota will spend the upcoming school year celebrating it's 125th anniversary. The festivities will kick-off during this summer's Harrisburg Days Parade in June where each school building will be represented with their own float in procession of the order each school was built. T-shirts, Koozies and other promotional items will be available to commemorate the occassion.
"What started out as one schoolhouse has grown into nine buildings over two cities. We have had the fastest growth in the state for the past 15 years which is attracting a lot of local business. Harrisburg is a modern day boom town!" says Communications Director, JoAnne VerMulm. "Along with the community's extreme growth and our continual need to meet that growth, our district has become a leader in the state toward providing our growing student population with a variety of innovative pathways to meet the needs of their learning and to help them achieve their future goals. These are exciting times for the district and community. Harrisburg has a lot to celebrate!"
The district has planned a yearlong series of events – with many more to be added throughout the year – to celebrate the 2019 Quasquicentennial, or 125th anniversary. While the community and district have grown and changed considerably since 1894, the district's commitment to children, families and the community remain the same.
To commemorate this momentous anniversary, the district has planned many ways to celebrate their proud past, exciting present and bright future. The upcoming year will be filled with events and special recognitions, bringing together students, staff, alumni, families and friends.
The anniversary celebration will culminate in two huge events: the graduation of Harrisburg High School’s 125th class in May of 2019, and just following graduation, Harrisburg Days in June 2019.
