Come Holy Spirit By Victoria Herrera

What is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is a divine person who is part of the Blessed Trinity, God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. It has been present since creation and is still present until this day. Mostly mentioned in the New Testament during Jesus message and ministry, the Holy Spirit also took the role of continuing God’s work after Jesus ascension and continues his work to this day in the church.(Holy Spirit and the Church)

Holy Spirit Influence and guidance on The church (1)

The Holy Spirit is present in the Church to inspire unity, service and worship. The presence of the spirit is often seen throughout the church and the church is open to the leadership of the spirit (Holy Spirit and the Church).

The Holy Spirit presence is seen through scared scriptures in where he is inspired, sacred tradition, the magisterium where the spirit assists, the liturgy through its words and symbols, in which the Holy Spirit puts us into communion with Christ, prayer where he intercedes for us, the gift and ministries by which the church is built up, witnesses of saints through whom he manifests his holiness and continues the work of salvation (Catechism of the Catholic Church).

Holy Spirit INFLUENCE and Guidance on the church (2)

The mission of Christ and the Holy Spirit is brought to completion in the Church, which is the Body of Christ and the Temple of the Holy Spirit. This brings the members of the church to share his communion with the father. The Spirit readies me in order to draw them to Christ. The Spirit manifests the risen Lord to them, recalls his word to them and opens their minds to the understanding of his Death and Resurrection. He makes present the mystery of Christ, supremely in the Eucharist, in order to reconcile them, to bring them into communion with God, that they may "bear much fruit" (Catechism of the Catholic Church).

CONTEMPORARY Example of Holy Spirit and the church

When ever I am having a hard time whether it be in school or at home, I always turn to the Holy Spirit which inspires me to make the right decisions, and keep my faith because I know it's there watching over me. The Holy Spirit is always watching over all of us and keeping us safe and happy.

The Holy Spirit can be seen in the gospel and homily of a priest in mass. The Holy Spirit inspires the priest in his homily to help his spread the word of Christ.

One contemporary example of the Holy Spirit can be seen through the sacrament of confirmation. "Confirmation, the sacrament connected to Baptism, is presented in the Acts of the Apostles in the form of an imposition of hands through which the apostles communicated the gift of the Holy Spirit.” (Holy Spirit in the Sacraments). In confirmation we are sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and our faith in the church is confirmed.

Holy spirit as a CONTINUATION of jesus ministry

“For I proceeded and came forth from God” (John 8:42); Jesus says that he and the spirit both “proceeds from the Father” (Jn 15:26).

In the quote above Jesus is not only saying he the one who proceeds the fathe, but the Holy Spirit as well. Since Jesus died on the cross the Holy Spirit proceeded his work (Origin of the Holy Spirit). It can be clearly seen at Pentecost, when many of Jesus' followers were gathered in prayer. The room was filled with a sound of violent wind and the Holy Spirit appeared in tongues of fire. The apostles were "filled with the Holy Spirit" (Act 2:4) and began talking about Jesus to all the Jews. On Pentecost thanks to the coming of the Holy Spirit is why that day is know as the birthday of the church. The Holy Spirit came to spread the word of God (Jesus and the Church).

REFLECTION

I learned that I must keep my mind open because the Holy Spirit constantly inspires us through our everyday life. I will try to think more about the important role the Holy Spirit plays every week when I attend mass, as well as throughout my studies of the church and Jesus. I will apply my faith into other subjects by thinking about how the Holy Spirit impacts many of the political issues around me and how I will follow the Spirits guidance around the issues. For future interfaith service learning we will be able to apply our knowledge of the Holy Spirit into other parts of the church and it's teachings.
