The Baker Blast March 7, 2020

Above: The Baker Book Club revealed our new book mural Wonder, in celebration of the Troybery 20th year anniversary. The book Wonder was the 2013 Troybery winner and a Baker student favorite. The Baker Book Club students fundraised to help purchase the mural and we are excited about this symbol of their ability to achieve a "Larger than Life" sized goal and their commitment to supporting literacy at Baker.

Spring Conferences

Thursday, March 12th 5 - 8 pm

Reminder: The Conference Manager will close Wednesday, March 11th at 3 pm.

The Spring Parent Teacher Conferences are right around the corner. They are scheduled for Thursday, March 12th from 5 - 8 pm. We are using the online Conference Manager scheduling tool to reserve conference times. This software, will allow you to pick and choose your own schedule for conferences, which can make for a more efficient and personalized experience for parents. Click on the link below to visit the Conference Manager website.

A few tips:

  • Keep “travel” time in mind and please do not schedule back to back conferences as it will take time to travel from room to room. Please allow 5 minutes between time slots.
  • Please only schedule one conference per teacher/class (unless you have more than one child per teacher). 6th grade parents may schedule two back-to-back sessions with their ELA teacher since it is a 2-hour block.
  • You can add comments/questions when scheduling your time that the teacher can see to help guide the conference
  • Need help with directions? You can always call the office and we will help get you scheduled.

Health Information and Preventative Measures

There are several proactive measures we are taking right now regarding concerns with coronavirus (COVID-19). There are things that you as parents and members of the school community can do that are critically important as well. If you did not receive the information, please review the content below.

This Week at Baker

Michigan School-Vocal Music Association District Choral Festival

Our 8th Grade Choir will be participating in the Michigan School-Vocal Music Association District Choral Festival this year. The festival experience allows our singers to be adjudicated by a panel of judges in performance and sight reading. We also get a chance to hear other middle school choirs from around the area. A fantastic learning experience all around!

Unlike Band and Orchestra Festival, Choral Festival takes place during the school day. Baker has been assigned to perform on Monday, March 16th at Dakota High School. 8th Grade Choir Members will leave Baker at 6:40 a.m. and return at approximately 11:15 a.m. Students will be responsible for any work they miss that morning. If you have any questions or concerns, please let Mrs. Johnson know. Thank you again for your continued support of our Baker Musicians!

Special Meeting Vote

Tuesday, March 10th at 3:15 pm

We would like to hold a special meeting to vote on the funding of water filling fountains at Baker Middle School. We are excited about the opportunity to partner with Troy School District to have two water bottle filling stations installed at Baker Middle School between now and the end of this school year. The model illustrated below is a unit made by the manufacturer of the products currently in use at Baker. They can be easily installed and are recommended by the district.

Baker Middle School is asking the PTO to fund $3,500 to purchase and install two Hydroboost In-Wall Bottle Filling Stations. One will be placed on each floor. This will be a wonderful addition for our students and it allows them to fill their water quickly so that they can take it with them to each of their classrooms throughout the day.

The special meeting and vote will be held on Tuesday, March 10th in the Media Center immediately following the end of the school day (3:15 pm). We look forward to moving forward with this exciting project!

Kroger Rewards & Amazon Smile

The Baker PTO has the opportunity to raise a significant amount of funds every year through purchases regularly made at Kroger and Amazon! Many of you already make purchases through these companies. They are willing to donate a portion of the proceeds back to Baker. These funds go directly into the classroom, impacting all Baker students. If you have not registered yet with Kroger or Amazon, simply click on the links below to find out how. Please consider asking your family and friends to sign up for this FREE benefit for our Bobcats. Thank you for support of the Baker PTO.

Baker Veteran's History Project

“The first installment of the Baker Veteran's History Project occurred on May 21 and 22, 2019. Veterans from all branches of service came in and sat down for interviews and shared their stories with groups of 8th grade students. Students recorded the interviews, documented with videos and images, and uploaded the files to an archive website that can be found at https://bakerveteransproject.weebly.com

The 8th graders are looking for more veterans to interview in May 2020. We are currently looking to get into contact with any veteran of any branch of service from any time that would like to come in and talk to a group of students about their experiences. Please take a moment to look at the website students created last year using the link above.

If you know someone that would like to participate please send them the link to the survey below as well! Sending them the link would help us gain more veterans and more stories to be told and shared! Please contact Mr. MacIntosh at zmacintosh@troy.k12.mi.us if you have any questions?
