The Alchemist Themes By: Kailey NUNes

'"We are afraid of losing what we have... [b]ut this fear evaporates when we understand that our life stories and the history of the world were written by the same hand" (79)

Fate is inevitable and no matter what you do, fate will always find its way back to you. People decide no to be afraid because they know that whatever is meant to happen will happen. This quote falls into the category of themes of "beware the destructive danger of fear". I believe this because the people are afraid of losing everything but they chose to not be afraid anymore because if they are afraid, they will follow a destructive path. This quote also has a lot to do with the phrase "maktub" which means, "it is written". I believe this because both of these quotes have a lot to do with how you can't write your own fate.

"Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the fear itself and no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of it's dreams because every second of the search is a second's encounter with God and eternity" (134)

If you fear your dreams then you will never live up to who you truly are. As you are living out your dream. Your soul is growing and living out it's destiny. There is no point in being afraid because your heart will only suffer. If you live out your dream then you are living up to your Personal Legend. You will never be happy if you let your fear get in the way of your dreams.

"Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the soul of the world, and we will one day return there" (132)

In your heart is all your dreams and aspirations. You can follow those dreams if you listen to what your heart's telling you to do. Accomplishing those dreams won't be so hard if you let your heart guide you in the right direction. This quote demonstrates the theme of "trust in your intuition and the world to guide you". I believe this because your heart is a part of your intuition and following your heart is guiding yourself onto the right path for success.

"Don't give into your fears... if you do, you won't be able to talk to your heart" (146)

Talking to your heart is important. Your heart holds all the answers to who you are and your soul. Fear will hold your heart back, and if your heart is held back it won't be the same. It will push your heart away and it will hide it's soul. This is because your heart has changed and it's not how was to begin with. This quote also illustrates the theme "beware the destructive danger of fear" This is because the danger of fear is holding you back from your one true self.

"He was going to miss the place and all the good things he had learned" (65)
The background photo is Andalusia, and this picture is Egypt.

Andalusia is Santiago's hometown, the place he left. Egypt is where Santiago traveled to, to complete his Personal Legend. Santiago leave his hometown because he wants to travel. He travels to Egypt because he had a two dreams about it and a gypsy told him to go. This quote demonstrates the theme of "have the ability to love and let go". I believe this because Santiago loves his hometown and will miss it because he grew up there and his family is there. He let it go because he wants to follow his dreams to travel and see the world.
