Cross Country

The Cross Country Team qualified for the OHSAA Division I State Championship for the second consecutive year. The team finished 11th overall at the State Meet, placing US in the Top 5% of all Division I programs in Ohio. Justin Iler '20 finished 3rd overall with a time of 15:25, setting a new University School record in the 5K. Also scoring for US at the State Meet with outstanding showings were Griffin Walsh ’21, Ben Lafave ’21, Nate Miller ’22, and Graham Clark ’20. Cam Monesmith ’20 and Riley Steiner ’20 turned in impressive performances for the team as well. Iler, Clark, Steiner, and Ray Muzilla '20 captained the US team this fall.

Varsity Football

Team 130 finished 6-4 and showed incredible resolve while overcoming several season-ending injuries to key players. The team's signature victories this season included wins over Gilmour (42-7) and Youngstown Chaney (22-13). Varsity Football captains for the 2019 season were Jack Borrow '20, Charlie Brennan '20, Ryan Devine '20, Nic Pujolas '20, and Max Young '20.

Varsity Golf advanced to the 2019 Division I District Tournament and just missed qualifying for the OHSAA State Championship. Leading the way for US throughout the season was captain Ben Clegg '20, along with Eric Areklett '20, Joey Kubic '21, Grant Mylen '21, Chris Bridge '22, Sachin Singh '23.

Varsity Soccer

Varsity Soccer played an incredibly difficult schedule that helped the team play its best soccer at the end of the season. After winning the Division I Sectional Championship, the team advanced to the District Semifinal before falling to Mentor, 1-0. Varsity Soccer captains for the 2019 season were Adam Kahn '20 and Nick Thomas '20.

Celebrating 50 Years of Ron Grant

Legendary teacher, coach, and Athletic Director Ron Grant, was honored over Homecoming Weekend for his 50 years of service to University School.

As University School's Varsity Swimming Coach, Ron coached 29 All-Americans, was named Northeast District Coach of the Year four times and received the OHSAA's Sportsmanship, Ethics, and Integrity Award in Swimming in 1998.

During his tenure as Athletic Director, Ron researched, proposed, and oversaw the construction of University School's 68,000-square-foot Kilroy Field House. He additionally coordinated the installation of the artificial turf at Scovil Field and the construction of the Foust Building, home to the locker rooms used by football and lacrosse.

In 2009, the US Athletic Department won the Ohio High Cup, presented annually by Ohio High Magazine to the top high school interscholastic program in the State.

Ron and his wife, Marcia, have two children, Brad '90 and Kristin, and are the proud grandparents of six. The Grant's two youngest grandsons are students at the US Shaker Campus.
