Lord of the Flies A Digital Journal

What dangers do you see as a person stranded on this deserted island. Be specific and explain your answers.

Well there are many dangers in being stranded on an island. There could be diseases, little to no food, no shelter, predators, no water, no help and overall a person could be stranded for many hours, days, weeks, months, or even years. Due to the fact that the island could be uninhabited there there cold be many diseases and there wouldn't be any vaccines or antibiotics to help combat sickness. Also if the person stranded didn't know what foods were safe they could eat dangerous food that could even kill the person. Also if a big group of people were the ones stranded the island might not be able to provide enough food for everyone. Again if the person didn't know how to create a shelter the person couldn't protect themselves from predators or the weather.

Type the rules we created as a classroom from the board. This is something we will return to. In the meantime, pick the rule you find most important (from the ones we created) and explain why that rule, above all others is most important on this island.

RULES

1. Travel in 2+

2. Don't go out at night

3. Share Resources

4. Clean up after yourself

5. Communicate Effectively

6. Do your job

7. Do NOT kill each other

Out of all the rules we created, I believe that the most import rule is that everyone should share there resources. I think this the most important rule because it can help the boys learn to work together, get along and to ration. These are important skills that can help the kids survive on the island. If everyone shared resources, it would help the boys live civil and it would stop conflicts from occurring because of envy or jealousy. Also, this would help everything run smoother for everyone. Thus making this rule the most important in my opinion.

One of the themes of this novel is survival. Explain why the setting of this story adds to or contributes to the theme.

In this book the setting plays a huge part in the development in the theme of survival. the setting is important because the young boys have been stranded on an island with no adults, no one knows where they are, and they are don't really know how to survive. they also don't know what is on the island and what is dangerous or not. In the book the boys say that all they want to do is survive long enough for them to be found. But, so far the boys have developed helpful skills, they have appointed each other jobs and have chosen Ralph as chief. since the boys are stranded they have to work together to be able to survive. this is why the setting is a vital part of the theme of survival.

Ralph has said, “This is a good island” (Golding 35). Ralph’s pronouncement will prove ironic; it is definitely NOT a good island. What problems do readers already know about? Explain why these problems prove this is NOT a good island after all.

So far there has been many problems in the book regarding the Island. This is why what piggy said is ironic. The boys have terrible luck on the island. Like they got stranded there. next nobody knows were they are , and they don't know how long it will take till they are rescued. But the worst thing took place in the second chapter when the young boy with the make on his face dies because the island caught on fire because the boys lost control of the flames. Next, the boys missed their chance to be rescued because a group of boys went hunting and left the fire unattended. the smoke began to die down and the ship didn't see it. Also there is a possibility that there is a beast on the island.

it isn't always what it seems

Describe the Beast that seems to be stalking the island. Use the text as backup for your info.

IN the book there is a mysterious creature that the boys have called "Beast". In the book the author uses description word/ hints on how the beast appears. in the sixth chapter Sam and Eric are keeping up with the fire when they think the see the beast. The boys describe the beast to be huge with teeth, eyes, claws, and wings. the boys don't know exactly were the beast lives. They think it lives in the lagoon, air or even on the tail of the island where they have not explored.

The mystery of the Beast

Name at least two things the boys are doing or have given up that show how they are now operating on instinct and no longer trying to follow the rules of society. Explain your answers with information from the text.

The boys have given up on trying to follow rules of society through the book. They no longer live by the sanitation rules. In the fifth chapter the boys have a meeting at the platform. Ralph addresses the fact that the boys are using the bathroom were ever they please. This is an example of how the boys have given up on societal rules because this would not be socially acceptable. Another way the boys have given up is that in society people tend to make decision on thoughts, feelings, and anything that will be accepted by society. In the book, the boys were stranded on the island with no adults, supplies, and they didn't know what was accompanying them on the unknown parts of the island. This lead to the boys beginning to just depend on their instincts to survive. day by day the boys began to defy the rules they made to keep them civilized. They also disobey the conch rule. In the first chapter Ralph finds the conch, then they use the conch as a talking stick. Anyways, the boys talk out of turn, ignore the person holding the conch, shout things out and overall are rude. The conch rule was made so that everyone could communicate and express themselves freely without being interrupted. in society being rude and talking when someone else is talking is also socially unacceptable. I think the boys have began to give up on societal rules because all they want to do is survive, even if the don't meet social expectations.

Two rituals people are most familiar with are weddings and funerals. Pick an event (a wedding or a funeral). Make a list of at least 3 phrases people use at the event you picked. Using one of your phrases, explain why your phrase is helpful in the situation.

1. " I Do"

2. " I promise to love and cherish you till death do us part"

3." Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness"

4." May God be Guiding your path"

Rituals have been practice for as long as there has been life on Earth. Many people associate rituals with a negative conintation but there are rituals many preform without knowing. A very well known ritual in society is a wedding. A wedding is when two people that love each other have a ceremony were they commit their lives to one another. In the wedding the two individuals say "I do" . This means that they promise to love and cherish each other. The people usually share vows . In these vows a thing one person says to each other is " I promise to love and cherish you till death do us part". This means that they will love each other and value each other till death tears them apart. Another phrase that is well known is "Wishing you a life time of love and happiness". This is told to newly wedds. This basically means that the person hopes that the couple have a prosperous and healthy marriage. I have heard people say "May God be guiding your path". this means that a person hopes that God is the center of their happiness, and that God will help them have a happy and healthy marriage. As a christian I believe that the phrase"May God be guiding your path". is the most useful quote. This is because in the bible it says that God is the light and love. If we do not learn to love Him and put him as the most important part of our life than we will not truly be happy

Choose a character, either Ralph or Jack and explain the effect seeing the Beast has on the character you have chosen. Use textual information to support your answer.

Trauma has a unique effect on everyone. In chapter seven Ralph, Jack, and Roger go hunt for the beast. At the top of the mountain the boys see the beast . Not all of the boys had the same reaction. One character in particular that had a greater reaction to the beast was Ralph. At the sight of the beast he felt physically, emotionally sick. In the book it is described that he saw "green lights of nausea"( Golding 123), he also was unable to move leaving him with the feeling like he was paralyzed. Ralph was feeling this way because of the fear of the unknown. He had such a terrified reaction that even jack asked him if he was "Scared?"(123)

Fear is not the action, its the feeling

Retell in your own words what has happened to Simon. Use textual evidence to help you create a vivid paragraph

In chapter nine we can see that Simon makes his way up the mountain. As we know the mountain is were the beast was seen. Simon had the idea in the last chapter to go see the beast and see what it really was. He sees the "beast" which we know is the Parashooter, he makes his way down to the boys to tell them that the beast really was. At the same time There was an incoming storm with lightning and wind. This set the scene of the death of Simon. In the book it says "Then he took the lines in his hands; he freed them from the rocks and the figure from the wind's indignity(Golding 147). As Simon made his way down the mountain on all fours, the boys were taking part in the ritual. the ritual went like " kill the beast! Cut his throat! spill his blood( Golding 152). The boys could only see a creature they belived was the beast. So as Simon made his way to the center of the circle to warn the boys, The parashoot filled with air and sent the man to sea. Now back to the boys. The boys as an impulse began to attack Simon thinking he was the beast and killed him. The book describes his how he was left after his death as" ...;and already its blood was staining the sand."(Golding 153).

Because Simon was a Christ like figure

In life people create groups. These groups might be at school, in sports, in extracurricular activities, and through religious organizations. Explain what needs groups fill for people. Explain both the positive and negative aspects of being part of a group. You may relate this to our novel, or you may make it a person reflection of your own experience.

Being social and having friends in today's society is viewed as necessary . In reality there are both ups and down to having a group of people. Some positives to having a group of people is that you always have someone to talk to, you don't feel like your alone, physically, mentally and emotionally;and you have someone to count on for anything. Also having groups can help someone by teaching a person on how to be more social, friendly and patient. Over all having a group of friends can be a great thing, but there is almost always a damaging effect. A negative thing about having a group of friends is that they can influence a person to do something that could harm them. Another reason is that some"friends" could abuse you in many different ways. since a bad person is in your group you might feel obligated to remain friends. But everyone has their own experince, I know I do.

“Which is better - to have rules and agree, or to hunt and kill?”

Using this quote, take a stand. Pick a side and explain why your decision is best on this island here at the end of Chapter 11. Don’t forget to use textual evidence to support your answer

Rules are created to keep people safe and secure. I think it is better to have rules. I think this because to have a successful society everyone has to follow the rules and if they don't the person who did the wrong doing should be held accountable for it. It was because of the rules that Ralph as chief created that the boys had things to eat, place to sleep, drink and be safe. Ralph also began the signal fire that eventually got them rescued even if it was Jacks fire. Also in the book Jack says"' I'm not going to play no longer. Not with you'"(Golding 127). This is when jack begins the savage group and everything began to get dangerous. Because the savage boys began to disobey the rules Simon and piggy were killed. These are the few reasons why I think rules are better.

GOOD VS. EVIL

A picture is worth a thousand words.

I Choose this photo of the conch because it represents the little peace of civilization left in the boys. In the book the boys were stranded on the Island where the only ''grownups'' were a couple of 12 year old boys. They began to set up rules, jobs and Use the conch as a form of law and order. We can see that the conch is respected by all and is a huge part of the story. My experience with this book has been great. this book has sparked many of thought that wouldn't have happened without this book. It has also made me very thankful for what I have and to live life like it is the last because we never know what might or even if there will be a tomorrow.

Dear future students,

In this class you will read a book called "Lord of the Flies" by William Golding. In my opinion I believe that this is a great book. I liked how the author overall used metaphors to explain the book and the plot line. Also I really connected with the readers especially with Simon and Ralph. This is because I can relate because I have a mixture of their personalities. Mrs. Lyda will give you three options to listen to this book. The British Man, Mrs. Lyda reading it to the class, or you reading it independently. I honestly prefer Mrs. Lyda reading it because I feel like I am more involved in the story. In this class she will also have you create a blog based on the book. This really was my favorite part. This helped me understand the book and feel more involved. It may seem like a difficult task to do but overall you will learn to enjoy it. You will also love this class as much as I do, I love it so much I don't want to leave.

Sincerely,

Lisbeth Alvarez
