A Glimpse Through the Mirror Life Without Help Is a life where you know nothing

Thesis: Paulo Coelho expresses the importance of mentors in our life through the roles of inspiration, perseverance, and the importance of goals through his book The Alchemist.

Detail 1: The first time the king talks to Santiago he inspires him to go and search for treasure (leading him to his personal legend) "... when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it" (Coelho 24).

Comparison 1: Likewise, in the movie, Finding Nemo, Dory, a main character, tries to "inspire" Marlin, Nemo's dad, to keep going even though it seems impossible by saying "Just keep swimming".

Detail 2: While Santiago is working for the crystal merchant he finds the perseverance to continue the journey to the pyramids to find the treasure that the king inspired him to find. The merchant convincingly said "...you know I am not going to Mecca. Just as you know that you're not going to buy sheep."(Coelho 63).

Comparison 2: Similarly in Homer's "The Odyssey" Odysseus is challenged in many adventurous ways on his journey home. Throughout his journey Odysseus is pushed to his limits and relies on his perseverance and faith in the goddess, Athena, to complete his journey home. Athena is trying to convince Zeus go let her help Odysseus by saying "... my heart is distressed for wise Odysseus... please the blessed gods that wise Odysseus shall return to his own home" (Homer 2).

Detail 3: While reading The Alchemist I noticed that Santiago always had some sort of goal whether it is a career or inspiration to complete his personal legend. "... I would do better to grow up and become a fisherman and come down to this beach every morning..." (Coelho 177). After trying to hear the bells that the fishermen said they could hear by the ocean he came to the conclusion that only fishermen could hear the bells and set his mind to achieve becoming a fisherman.

Comparison 3: According to the website, dangheesling.com, having a life mentor helps you become successful. Stated by the author of this article Dan Gheesling "“Nothing great was ever accomplished alone.” For every goal I have achieved in my life, I can trace back each goal to a mentor or individual who helped achieve it."

Conclusion:As you can see Paulo Coelho does express the importance of mentors throughout our lives through the roles of inspiration, perseverance, and the importance of setting goals through The Alchemist along with Dory from Finding Nemo, Athena from "The Odyssey", and the online coaching website, dangheesling.com.
