Education Explained

Each week, CCS Administrators highlight common terms and philosophies in education, and explain how they impact teaching and learning at Collegium. This week's contribution comes from Dr. Antoinette Rath, Collegium CEO.

Growth Mindset

Carol Dweck, Ph.D., an educational researcher from Stanford University, tells us that a "fixed-mindset" is the belief that intelligence is fixed ... it simply is what it is. A "growth-mindset" is the belief that intelligence is malleable and can develop over time ... simply, we are never too old to learn new things. Having a growth-mindset coupled with an ability to persevere over a long-term goal or persevere through challenges and obstacles is the separating factor for student success. This ability to persevere through challenging tasks is called grit. Researchers have found that grit has a more significant correlation to high school graduation rates than factors such as family income or social status.

Middle school students focusing on their classwork.

As partners in our students' success, what can you do at home to promote grit and a growth-mindset for your child's aspirations? Encourage your child to look forward to the next challenge. Help them see mistakes as temporary setbacks. Allow them space and time to enjoy the process of practicing so that they see practicing as part of the process of becoming good at something. Show them the importance of working until tasks are complete. Give them specific instructions so that they can begin each task confidently. Reinforce a growth-mindset by letting your children know that they can learn ... they can advance ... and, they can keep mastering new things.

Watch Dr. Dweck's Developing a Growth Mindset video below.

Flu Clinic on Campus

In cooperation with the Chester County Health Dept. our annual campus flu clinic will be Friday, October 27th during the school day. Please note, the flu mist is not available this year. Only the injection will be offered.

If you are interested in having your child receive a flu vaccine, please complete a consent form (below) and return to your child's School Nurse by Friday, October, 20th. Forms received after October 20th will not be processed.

The age-appropriate activities include games and challenges often found in the elementary physical education classroom.

To register, complete and return the appropriate registration form with payment by Wednesday, October 4, 2017. Participant rosters will be posted on the CCS Intramurals webpage. High School Homecoming

This year's Homecoming Dance and Spirit Week are shaping up to be a celebration for the ages!

Incorporating two sporting events into Spirit Week, the Cougars' Varsity Volleyball team will battle it out at home in front of a raucous crowd in the 535 William D. Winters gym on October 10th at 4:00pm.

A couple days later, the Varsity Soccer team squares off against AIM Academy at USTC on October 12th at 3:00pm.

These festivities culminate in this year's Homecoming Dance on October 14th from 7:00-10:00pm in our 535 gym. Tickets will be sold for $10.00/each the week before the dance and at the door. Non-CCS guests may attend with a signed permission slip, available where tickets are sold. Our Homecoming Dance theme is Vegas Nights, and we're sure luck will be on our side!

All Collegium students and families are welcome to attend our volleyball and soccer matches; however, the Homecoming Dance is only for our current 9th-12th grade students and their guests.
