Dear Friends:
Over the past year, movements like #MeToo, #SurvivorSpeaks and #TimesUp have been a collective force for empowering women who have experienced sexual and domestic violence. These movements have started a global conversation, but there’s more work to do. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 1 in 3 women have experienced physical violence from an intimate partner, and 75% of assaults are targeted towards the head and face. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry Charitable Foundation (AACDCF) continues to play a crucial role in part of the healing process for survivors of domestic and sexual violence by restoring damaged smiles through the Give Back a Smile (GBAS) program.
Since the program’s inception, more than 1,700 damaged smiles have been restored. This past year, 67 people were connected with volunteer dentists for smile restoration services, and we’re on a mission to do more.

GBAS has given me back my self-confidence and built my self-esteem back up. I am able to smile again and laugh without hiding behind my hands.
- 35 smile restorations completed
- GBAS patients each received an average of $10,000 in smile-restoration services
- 67 new program applicants connected with a volunteer dentist
- 16 volunteer dental laboratories donated their time and talents to restore smiles
- Your donations assisted 49 patients with the expenses of traveling to and from their 128 dental appointments
$4,000 in educational scholarships awarded

LaQuita's Story
LaQuita is a singer, actress, artist and teacher from Chicago. She was in a relationship with someone she thought she loved. Over time, he became verbally and physically violent. One night, with her young son in the room, he hit her in the face with a large radio. Her entire face was swollen, her front teeth damaged, but even more so, her self-esteem, career and heart were destroyed. She missed work for a week as she could not bring herself to be in front of her students she vowed to inspire.
LaQuita left that relationship, and by doing so, she became homeless. She felt broken, ashamed to talk to anyone and lacked the confidence to carry on with her singing career. Her entire life was flipped upside down.
Years later, a friend told her about the Give Back a Smile program. Dr. Parihan Tamkin restored her smile and completely changed her life. She states “Every aspect of my life has been not only restored but upgraded. Dr. Tamkin is the best doctor I’ve had. I came to her broken, embarrassed and defeated. I was ready to give up on my music and performing. Dr. Tamkin, her staff and the Give Back a Smile program saved my life by restoring my smile.”
At AACD 2018, we had the honor of experiencing LaQuita’s amazing musical talents. Her performance was moving and unforgettable.

DentalPost Jumps in the Lake
The DentalPost team has been a supporter of Give Back a Smile for 6 years. They host an annual event called “Go Jump In the Lake” hosted by DentalPost CEO and founder Tonya Lanthier, where they invite friends and family to her lake home to spread awareness and celebrate GBAS.
This year they engaged the entire dental community to help raise money leading up to their big event. All their efforts generated $10,000 for the program!
