3101 Pico Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA
Tucked away in this sunny beach town, we have a true vintage gem of McCabe's. The name "guitar shop" is beyond an understatement. McCabe's is a legendary venue where people of extreme talent have come to play for decades. It's small, warm and cozy, and at night, the showroom is converted into an intimate indoor venue, creating a super special ambience for artists and audiences alike.
For starters, the walls are lined with, well, you guessed it, guitars. This second layer on the walls of perfectly tuned strings and ornately carved wood provides an acoustic element you would be hard-pressed to find elsewhere. The general feeling as everyone gathers is one of merriment and relaxed anticipation. Those present obviously understand that some magic is in the works....
Preceding my attendance of Saturday night's festivities, I had the pleasure of sitting in with Espie Riskin, owner of McCabes. Alongside her offspring and very talented, knowledgeable staff, Espie is quick to point out "They are not clerks...!" They are musicians. They are always happy to offer a smile and genuine assistance for your every musical need. The plethora of countless instruments on sale within the shop is enough to make you feel like you are a child at a toy store. The ascetic beauty of the instruments will send you over the top.
Adam Perlmutter, of Acoustic Guitar Magazine produced a beautiful article, about McCabe's, laden with lots of history and fun facts.
What a great read to warm myself up for Saturday night's show.
