Semifinal Recap Men's Volleyball

DES MOINES, Iowa - The 2019 NAIA Men's Volleyball Championship continued with the semifinals on day four in the Charles S. Johnson Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Aquinas (Mich.) and Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.) advanced to the inaugural championship on Saturday.

Aquinas (Mich.) def. Missouri Baptist, 3-1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-21, 31-29) BOX SCORE

Benedictine Mesa (Ariz.) def. Grand View (Iowa), 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) BOX SCORE

Aquinas vs Missouri Baptist

Set 1: Aquinas jumped out to an early 7-3 lead but Missouri Baptist closed the small scoring gap and knotted things up. The teams matched each other point for point until the Saints closed out the first set with back-to-back blocks.

Set 2: MBU gained control of the second set early and did not relinquish that lead to even the score at one set apiece.

Set 3: The teams remained within two points throughout the third set. After being tied at 17 all, Aquinas put together an 8-4 run to win the set 25-21.

Set 4: The Saints led early in set four, but the Spartans tied things up again. The fight for the fourth set continued well past the typical 25 points until a couple of MBU errors gave Aquinas the 31-29 set four win.

Aquinas vs Missouri Baptist

Steven Rodriguez of Missouri Baptist led all hitters with 19 kills.

Zane Moothart of Aquinas posted a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs

Benedictine Mesa vs Grand View

Set 1: Despite Benedictine Mesa's early lead, Grand View remained right with the Redhawks and tied things up six time. At 19 all Benedictine went on a 5-2 run for the first set win.

Set 2: The teams battled for the lead right away in the second set but after six all Benedictine was able to create some space and lead by as much as six before the team captured a 25-23 set two win.

Set 3: The Redhawks captured an early 9-3 lead that they would see through to a 25-18 set three win to sweep the Vikings.

Benedictine Mesa vs Grand View

Felix Chapman of Grand View led all hitters with 26 kills

The Vikings Joseph Hallowell led in digs with eight.

Up Next

The inaugural championship match will take place on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. central. The match will feature Aquinas and Benedictine Mesa.
