They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted--twice dead.
There are Christians who have very little to do with church. Yet they exude the life of God, without fuss and without airs. This does not mean that they are not accountable to others, or that they are not in relationship. It means they are more JESUS than Christian and more the manifestation of the person of Jesus than they are of religion. Life does not flow from behaviors or objects. It flows from Jesus.
Spirit/life flows into your being from the Trinity and into people and things you touch
'I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing' John 15.5 NIV.
A subtle delusion subdues our spirit when we imagine we are in Jesus because we are in church. Or because we have a program of good deeds. Our Godliness - better known as the spirit of sonship - is more basic and undergirding than anything we do. Rootedness in Father is the life of our deeds and the reason our efforts overflow with spirit and life. Or not. This is why busy-busy Christians can be rivers of sand while their un-fussed and peaceful colleagues are rivers of life, almost entirely without effort.
I'm amazed at the obsession some have with 'getting church right.' Like 'Let's juggle and jiggle all the churchy bits into an optimum arrangement and then we'll come alive." Right?
Wrong. None of these derivatives have life in themselves. Only Jesus does. It's not rocket science. Jesus said, 'I am the way the truth and the life. Those who eat me will live because of me. Unless you eat my flesh and drink my blood you have no life in you.' When He is our life we will be His church. So why do people rush around looking for a new form of church? Why do people fixate themselves on simple church and its formulae? Why do others go in to bat for the received institutionalism? Why do House Church aficionados begin with enthusiasm and two years later leave in frustration with a tired yawn and a yawning emptiness in their hearts? Because they are trying to draw life from the husk instead of the substance. Jesus alone is life.
