Field Ready: Stories Restoring Power After the Hurricanes in the USVI

Electricity enables life. It keeps diabetes medication safe to use. It cools tropical heat for the elderly. Enables businesses to run. Keeps children in school and able to learn. Without electricity the country cannot recover and economic activity remains stagnant.

The country had solar power but even that was destroyed

The solar panels look broken but they still work!

Field Ready has found a solution.

A majority of the country is living without electricity and the government is working hard to restore power, but unfortunately this is no easy task. While many of the solar panels are damaged, Field Ready has found a way to salvage them.

On the assessment Field Ready met with potential partners to determine the most effective ways to help provide power to those in need. It became apparent after seeing the number of damaged solar panels that investing capacity in salvaging them would help to relieve vulnerable people suffering due to lack of power.

We plan to train local people to repair solar panels which will increase their livelihood opportunities after much of the economy was obliterated. With new skills, people can power their own way through recovery.
