If I Stay By: Gayle Forman

It was released in 2009.

The story follows 17-year-old Mia Hall as she deals with the aftermath of a deadly car accident involving her family. Mia finds herself in a coma, while the rest of her family is fighting for their lives.

“Love, it never dies. It never goes away, it never fades, so long as you hang on to it. Love can make you immortal” ― Gayle Forman, If I Stay

The story shows Mia's life and her journey as a teen. After the fatal car accident, Mia finds herself having an out-of-body experience. Her life is on the line and she's hanging on by a thread. Helpless, ghost Mia watches everything that happens to her family and experiences her hospital visitors praying for her recovery.

The theme of this book is choices. All the choices that people make influence others and it can change how ones life rolls out. Mia has a big decision to make and other people also influence her by how they act around her while she is in a coma.

About Gayle Forman:

  • Award winning, best selling author
  • She also published a fiction trilogy that consisted of the titles Just One Day, Just One Year, and Just One Night
  • A journalist for Glamour, Elle, Cosmopolitan, Seventeen Magazine, and other publications.

This book was very descriptive and showed all the emotions. There were many plot twists and it kept you guessing what Mia would choose to do. The only thing that could've made it better would be more stories to explain who Mia and her family are and more details about their lives.
