Saul Bass Great American Designer

From the late 1940’s until the early 1990’s, Saul Bass created more than a dozen campaigns for films. These campaigns included posters and title sequences.

His posters had a certain style to them.

Colors were few, but bold in their application.
The imagery was treated similarly to a logo or a symbol: strong, simple, memorable, metaphorical, and easily applied to any number of other graphic applications.
He often used large, uneven color blocks...
...and large, bold, hand-drawn text. The letters were often all-caps and had a certain excitement to them.
Occasionally, he incorporated subtle texture.
