September Blooms at Tryon Palace

Happy September! It’s almost fall y’all! While this is a crazy busy time in the garden, we’re much anticipating the changes in temps, plants and gardens! It’s been a hot summer and the last two years has brought a lot of fatigue to the world as a whole. We’re hopeful for a brilliant blooming fall and a time to reset a little before our holiday season begins in earnest.

This month, we’re planting over 10,000 “baby plants” in the nursery yard for the gardens, plant sale and the NCHC store. These include violas, pansies, herbs and winter blooming perennials. This is also the one of the last months you’ll get to see most of our summer annuals since the time for mums and violas is soon approaching! The gardens will be in transition over the next few weeks making room for new things. Many of the other gardens have perennials still holding their own as our annuals start to morph into their winter phases.

We’ve got some amazing new flowers in both bulbs and annuals coming soon, but you’ll still get the short burst of signature fall color from chrysanthemums later this month and part of October. Keep an eye on the asters and salvias this time of the year for some really amazing pollinator plants with fall colors! Join us for our Behind the Scenes tour on September 28 to learn more!

Our Fall Plant Sale is October 8& 9 from 9-5, during Garden Lovers weekend, featuring free gardens admission October 8-10.

We’ll have perennials, shrubs, trees, annuals and edible plants! Come early to get your favorites!

In preparation for this sale, we’ll be co-hosting with Craven County Agricultural Center, “Heritage Plants of ENC & Trade Specials” on Saturday, September 18th, at 10:00 AM, in the Cullman Performance Hall at the North Carolina History Center. Jennifer Knight, community gardener, Craven County Master Gardener, and owner of Knightscapes Enterprises, and I will be leading a discussion and sneak peek into some of our favorite plants and what we’ll have at the Fall Sale! Masks are required. Be sure to join us!

We’ve got plenty of work to do in the gardens and we always love more help. Our volunteers are the absolute reason that we are able to accomplish as much as we do. We especially need help mowing, watering and mulching in the gardens. Due to current guidance, we do require all volunteers to be fully vaccinated. We’ve got plenty of work to do in the gardens and we always love more help. If that sounds like your cup of tea, please contact me at hadley.cheris@ncdcr.gov.

We hope to see you soon! Happy Gardening,

Hadley Cheris, Tryon Palace Gardens and Greenhouse Manager
