Each month, BHS focuses on different topics relating to social media, digital citizenship, and mobile devices. These advisory activities vary each month - some months will provide full class assemblies, and others may focus more on workshop sessions, or small group advisory conversations. It is our belief that mobile devices and social media can be a powerful tool to help promote and highlight positive things that are happening in our lives and assist in communicating with others. Let's work together to strive for a collaborative, informative, supportive and open minded 'digital life'.
Advisory Activities

As a thank you to advisories who complete a minimum of 3 tasks over the course of the school year, Mr. Hagen will award ONE advisory per grade a free breakfast during fourth quarter. In an effort to help determine which advisories have completed particular tasks, advisors are asked to mark activities on the spreadsheet below. NOTE: Only advisors have access to the spreadsheet. Best of luck to all advisories.

OCTOBER

Positive Digital Citizen

This month's focus is about how we as a community can help promote a positive atmosphere in the digital world. What we share online can and should help inspire others. Now matter the tool, anything that is shared or posted with your handle/name will have a lasting impression and will be part of a person's digital tattoo.

This month, the Freshmen class was introduced to the year long curriculum at BHS by attending a presentation "Social Media and You" during activity period on Monday, October 16, 2017. An overview of the different topics that will be discussed during the year was shared at the meeting.

NOVEMBER

Be Present

This month's topic will remind all users of mobile devices to live in the present. Too often we find our peers or ourselves looking at our mobile devices too much during the day. Find yourself in a situation where your friends, colleagues, or family members are more interested in looking at their phones instead of paying attention to you and your conversation? Ever find yourself looking at your mobile device instead of dealing with a difficult situation that is presented to you? Ever wonder where the time went due to being on your mobile device? There are many instances where mobile devices can help you not be 'present'. It is important that we constantly remind ourselves to be present and live in the moment. Trust us...you don't want to miss out...

During Advisory on Thursday, November 9, 2017, who whole school participated in a tech free advisory. Students and staff were encouraged to put away all devices and embrace each other during a 'tech free' 25 minute advisory. Advisories participated in a wide range of activities from playing games to conversing with each other.

Counselors at BHS will meet with Senior Advisories during the month of November to help encourage students to 'live in the present' from time to time. Before Seniors know it, their senior year will be completed.

DECEMBER

Cyberbullying & Digital Drama

This month's focus is about how we can help support each other to put an end to cyberbullying and digital drama. Tips on what to do when seeing such things happen will be shared.

January

Mental Health

This month is all about how we can help support our students with not letting devices affect their mental health. There is some research out there that indicates students who are on their mobile device too much can in fact affect their mental health. It is all about having the right balance of tech and non-tech.

On Monday, Jan 22, 2018, Ann Duckless from NAMI (National Alliance of Mental Illness) NH delivered a presentation to our junior class on how connectedness to technology can contribute to anxiety and depression.

February

Online Safety

This month is all about how students can stay safe online. We all are online at some point during the day - making sure that we are in the right places, don't provide certain information to others, or communicate with those that we don't know/trust is an important responsibility.

On Thursday, Feb 15, 2018 during advisory, students will participate in a Quizlet Live game consisting of online safety terms and procedures.

March

Distracted Driving & Distracted Walking

This month is all about how students and staff can stay safe when they are driving and walking in public. We all have mobile devices readily available to us. At times, we really should not be on those devices - especially when it comes to driving and walking across streets.

Some questions to ponder:

  • Did you know that some cities like Honolulu will fine people who are texting while crossing a street?
  • Were you a passenger while someone wad texting and driving?

Students and teachers both trying out ‘Distracted Diving Simulators’ during lunches for two days during the month of March #itcanwait - big thanks to CHAD of NH for helping us make this possible.

Curriculum was complied and curated by the Social Media Awareness team at Bedford High School from a wide range of resources.
