Gantry State Park Light The Night: Sunset, long exposures & light painting

Join us for a sunset photo shoot in Gantry Plaza State Park in Long Island City. Besides having a beautiful city view to photograph we will have a talented model to pose for us. We will start at sunset and into blue hour. Susan will show off light painting techniques as the light fades and the city lights start to twinkle. We will experiment with long exposures and light painting.

MEETING LOCATION: Outside American Brass Restaurant, 2-01 50th Ave, Queens, NY, 11109

Starting time 7:30pm-10:30pm (Please come on time so we can start promptly)

What is Included? Professional photographer's guidance and teaching and location expertise. In the field instruction. Light painting tool to try out and an awesome model

What should I expect? We will be exploring Long Island City and will start just before sunset to review basic camera settings. Here is an opportunity to experiment with ND Filters and long exposures.Then we will be capturing the city lights turning on from different parts of the pier.

This photography walk is designed to give all participants the opportunity to shoot and capture beautiful cityscapes. We will guide you through different photography techniques, camera settings and how to use filters to properly expose your shots.

We will be doing some walking so it is advised for you to dress in layers and wear proper footwear.

We also recommend bringing a water and snack to stay hydrated and happy.

Gear Guide

  • Wide angle( 12-24 or 16-35 etc) - great for wide sweeping landscapes and nightscapes. f/2.8
  • Medium telephoto (24-70) - great for all around photography, landscape to portrait to moderate close up and detail shots
  • Telephoto - (70mm -200) - great for compressing the landscape and tighter compositions
  • Tripod
  • Extra batteries
  • Memory cards
  • Remote shutter release (tethered or wireless)
  • Filters (Optional) Circular polarizer, Graduated Neutral Density filter, 10 Stop Neutral Density Filter
  • Remote shutter release
  • Head lamp
  • Any light painting tools (Glow Sticks, light wand & flashes)
