ILLEGAL DUMPING Life orientation project

Illegal dumping, which is becoming prominent in our community, is the dumping of waste illegally without using authorized facilities.

Interviews were conducted as to what some members of the community believed were the causes of illegal dumping in the community. The same people were then asked what they thought were the major effects of this and also had to provide plausible solutions to tackle the issue of illegal dumping.

The following 3 questions were asked to each individual;

What do you think is the main reason why illegal dumping is a problem in our community?

People don't care about living in cleanliness- Lloyd, Community resident
Someone is always expecting another person to come and clean up after their mess- Bongani, Community resident
The government is not doing their job, causing illegal dumping to continue as a trend and accumulate in the community- Sive, G10M
Many people live in places where it's part of their everyday lives, they see it everyday and it's the norm. ie. If you live in a place where illegal dumping is non existent, you also wouldn't engage in illegal dumping geNerally speaking- Mr Horn

What effects does illegal dumping have on the community?

It just destroys the overall outlook of our community and compromises its integrity- LLOYD
Illegal dumping can be a major threat to our health as it is an agent of land, water and sometimes air pollution. This can cause health problem in the community- Bongani
It can interfer witH processes that might cause us to eNd up having dirty water delivered to our hOUseholds from a heAlth perspective. From an economic perspective, the Continuous illegal dumping decreases the property value of the houses In the area as the whole place becomes unappealing- Sive
It just creatEs a place that seems like one you can't be proud of- MR HORN

Are there any solutions you can suggest that could possibly help eradicate this issue?

If it starts with a few people in the commuNity, such as yourself, addrEssing the issue, then i beliEve we are one step closer to sTopping illegal dumping. Because, the more cOncious and aware people are that this is An actual problem, the more we can all work together to save ouR community!- Lloyd
If people changed their overall mentality and realize that it is their resPonsibility, not aNyone else's to Live in a clean communiTy, maybe we can get rid of this issue fOrever- Bongani
Getting the government to fund a few projects that Will clean all illegal dumping sights, as well as raise awarenEss to tHe public about All the effects of illEgal dumping- SIVE
SINCE PEOPLE DON'T WANT RUBBISH IN THEIR HOMES, THEY LOOK FOR OTHER WAYS TO DUMP IT, LEADING TO THIS ISSUE. THEREFORE, IF RUBBISH COLLECTION SERVICES WERE TO BE PROVIDED MORE OFTEN, THERE'D BE LESS ILLEGAL DUMPING- MR HORN

There are many ways in which illegal dumping can be stopped, however, this is mostly dependent on members of the community. As mentioned above, people need to change the mentality that someone else is going to do this for them, or that it's the government that should come and clean up. Although this is partially necessary as the government does need to provide some resources, the initiative must start with the members within the community.

Short term solutions

  • Government funded projects to raise awareness
  • People within the community addressing the issue
  • Residents reporting illegal dumping

Long term Solutions

  • Fining illegal dumpers
  • Carefully picking out objects that can be recycled so that they are not thrown away
  • Projects that clean up current illegal dumping sites
  • Educating people on effects of illegal dumping
  • Change of mentality that someone else will clean it up for me
