Finnair's Scandinavian gateway June 2017 - an Atlantic Link case story

For the first time ever, Finnair has introduced a direct connection between Finland and California on June 1st 2017. The Finnish airline launched their new seasonal flight (June 1st to September 30th) between Helsinki and San Francisco International Airport with three weekly departures.

Through a close partnership with Finnair, Visit California in Scandinavia and Finland, represented by Atlantic Link, made sure that the important route got off to the best start possible.

Inauguration event at the U.S. Embassy

To celebrate the new gateway, Visit California and Finnair hosted an inauguration event at the U.S. Embassy in Helsinki the day before the first flight. The participant list included key media partners, travel trade executives, and industry influencers among the 100 guests with Karin Gert Nielsen, Managing Director of Visit California Scandinavia and Finland, among the keynote speakers.

Taking advantage of the PR opportunity

The following day, Anders Bjerre Jakobsen, Public Relations Manager of Visit California Scandinavia and Finland, departed Helsinki for San Francisco on the inaugural flight together with a group of six key Scandinavian and European media.

This was the second of two press FAM corporations between Visit California and Finnair dedicated to secure high quality coverage of the new seasonal service to San Francisco as well as to give the media a unique insight into the strong diversity of The Bay Area including the trendy culture and history of San Francisco, the pulsating sports scene in Oakland, and the world-class food, wine and beer scene in Berkeley and Sonoma County.

The media participants on the two trips included key journalists and influencers from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Germany, Italy and Russia, securing both broad and high quality coverage.

The new route is off to a great start and we cannot wait to follow the development over the coming months.
