World War I A World impacted

World War I led to the collapse of empires and profound economic depression for Western European nations. The instructor commentary summarizes the events leading to the war, with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand of Austria-Hungry. Soon, other nations chose sides between Austria and Germany. While the United States initially chose to remain neutral, they too later joined the fight and at war's end, became a superpower nation (Darty, n.d.)

The interactive game "Our World War," gives a very real account of how soldiers fought in war, with the story line based on true events. It is interesting to go through the decision-making process in this game. Choices that seem to be common sense are replaced with the harsh reality of the war. For example, I was asked if I would shoot an unidentified soldier coming in my direction. Going along with the story, I guessed it was one of the fellow soldiers, named Bill, therefore I chose not to shoot. I was shocked to learn that my decision was actually wrong, and that during the war, soldiers chose to not take any risks and shot at any unidentified soldier, even if later they learned that they had committed "friendly fire,"(BBC, n.d.).

Imperial War Museums displayed an exhibit of World War I artifacts in 2014. One of the exhibitions that caught my attention was the "Five Things You Need to Know About the First World War." What was staggering to me was the destruction that the war left behind; 16 million people died, and the fall of the Ottoman, Austrian, and Russian empires. Also, the both positive and negative impacts of the war upon women's suffrage was an interesting topic to read. What was distressing for me was to learn how as much as 750,000 British men perished in the war, leaving their widows to remain unmarried for necessity or choice. Lastly, reading the exhibit about the “10 Things That Could Save Your Life During the War,” was truly fascinating. Seeing the advances taken in medical care during that time (although compared to now, may seem very basic at best), was considered very advanced as medical science needed to keep in step in order to counter the improved and new weaponry and subsequent injuries sustained in war ( IWM, 2016).

Life in Italy During the Great War gives a very relatable account of how the war affected every aspect of life, and to people young and old. Schools changed their curriculum to focus of what was occurring during the war. Movies all had a patriotic theme. And women were forced into the workforce to fill the positions that were left empty by the men; working in machinery and steel factories, as well as in transport (Itineraries of WWI-Travelling in history, 2006).

The first World War was just that, a world war. It changed the lives of millions whom were in the battling countries during this period. The impacts of this war forever changed these nations, with some meeting the end of their reign.
