Manhattan

Manhattan Island 21,5 km long and 3,7 km wide. It is through bridges and tunnels connected to New Jersey in the west, the Bronx in the northeast, Brooklyn and Queens in the east and south. Manhattan is known for its skyscrapers, the yellow taxis and the financial center Wall Street. The island attracts many tourists. In 1628 Peter Minuit bought for the Republic of the United Netherlands Manhattan from the Lenape Indians for goods worth 60fl(this is 680 euros). The purchase would be the start of New Amsterdam. Later it became New York.

Brooklyn

The name is an English corruption of the Dutch Breuckelen. Reads the motto of Brooklyn: “Een draght maeckt maght”, which the Dutch roots of this city appear.Brooklyn has an area of 251 km² and has 2.5 million inhabitants. In Brooklyn can you find the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the Prospect Park Zoo. A well-known neighborhood is Brighton Beach, close to the bathing beach and amusement center Coney Island located, that the last fifteen years a district of Russian Jews became, nicknamed:”Little Odessa”. Brooklyn was founded in 1646 by Dutch who were seated on behalf of the Dutch West India Company.

Queens

Queens is a county located in the US state of New York, and the majority (in area) borough of New York City. Queens consists of several parts: Jamaica, Long Island City, Flushing and Far Rockaway. Queens has two major institution of higher education: Queens College and Saint John’s University. Queens was one of the original twelve counties from the English county New York, set in 1683.After the conquest of the Dutch colony of New Netherlands by the English in 1664 and 1674, this province was New York, which included a much larger area than the current New York State, transformed into an English and later British crown colony.

The Bronx

The Bronx is since 1874 one of the boroughs of New York. It had less inhabitants than Manhattan, but with 109 km², it’s almost twice at large. The Bronx is located in the north of the city, just across the Harlem River from Manhattan. It is named after the Dutch Jonas Bronck, which established the first settlement in 1639 as part of the colony of New Netherlands. In the seventies, the Bronx was practically uninhabitable. High unemployment and the resulting poverty causes violence and drug abuse.

The Bronx Park is a park where the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo are located. There’s also the baseball club New York Yankees located.

Staten Island

It is an Island on the west side of the Narrows at the entrance of the ports of New York. Staten Island coincides with the county Richmond, the southernmost county in the state of New York. It is the least populated district of New York, and the most distant from the centre. In the past there were farms, some were even active in the 60s of the twentieth century. Since the opening of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge is the population in the city growing very fast.

Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty is a statue in New York Harbor. The statue is a symbol of freedom, one of the core values of the United States and serves as a sign of welcome to everyone: Returning Americans, visitors and immigrants.

The 46 meter high statue (93 meters if the base is included) with a weight from 225 tonnes was a gift from France to commemorate the Declaration of Independence and also a sign of friendship. The plaque in her left hand says “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI” the date (July 4, 1776) of the statement in Roman numerals.

Central Park

Central Park is a large park on the island of Manhattan in New York City. It is the most famous park in New York and perhaps even in the United States. Central Park is often to see in films and television programs. With 25 million visitors a year is the park the most visited park in the United States. The elongate park extends about 4 kilometers from 59th to 110th Street and has a total surface area of 341 hectares. The construction of the park took 16 years to complete. The park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.

Empire State Building

The Empire State Building is a 381 meter skyscraper in New York. In 2016 it was the third highest building from the city and the

fifth on the list of tallest buildings in the United States. The name of the building comes from the nickname of New York: the Empire State. The building was from 1931 to the construction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in 1971, the highest in the world. After the destruction of the World Trade Center as a result of the attacks on September 11, 2001, the Empire state Building was again the tallest building in New York. Remained so until April 30, 2012, being the under construction One World Trade Center took over this position.

World Trade Center

The World Trade Center or WTC was a complex of seven buildings with a total floor area of 1.24 million m² located in the financial heart of New York. The WTC was famous for its two 110 story towers the North Tower and the South Tower (the Twin Towers). The two towers has a height of 417 meters. The World Trade Center was an undeniable part of New York and was seen around the world as a symbol of the United States.

The Complex was taken on February 13, 2001, by a fire and on February 26, 1993 by a bomb attack. Eventually, the buildings destroyed on September 11, 2001 when terrorist with 2 planes flew into the Twin Towers.

The National September 11 Memorail & Museum was built on the site of the original towers. Next to the Museum was built the One World Trade Center; a new tower, which was commissioned in late 2014.

Times Square

The square is the cultural center of New York. In the eighties of the 20th century stood around very impoverished by. Through a joint initiative of the government and entrepreneurs got around after 1990 again ancient allure, although critics find it a shame that the original raw atmosphere has disappeared and small business owners are treated unfairly. Notable features of the Times Square are the electronic billboards of which there are more than 50. The Broadway theater district, named after the street, is located here. Every New Year’s Eve there are many people on and around the square.
