February 2020 Mother Margaret Mary High School

Let Us Pray

God of wisdom and hope, you call us to work in your fields, to sow the seeds of your love, to weed out injustice, to nurture the young and the needy. May we answer this call with humility, trust and joy. May we always know that you are working with use. May we always know your comfort and support. Amen.

Principal's Message

We hope that you had a wonderful Christmas and New-Year break. Semester one has now passed and we are on to the second half of this school year. I cannot express enough how blessed I feel to be the principal of such a wonderful school. The students at MMM continue to represent themselves in a way that makes us proud.

Within this newsletter you will find information about the many things happening at MMM. There is a lot going on in many different directions from athletics, to fine arts, to robotics and social justice. It is a great place to be. Please consider becoming involved in our parent council, it is an integral part of our school. The generous support of our parents allows us to offer more to our students.

In February, we will be visiting the four junior high schools that are designated to MMM to share information about our school and invite them to come to our open house on March 4. Our students are our best ambassadors, we will be asking them to volunteer to help at open house.

God Bless, Dean Rootsaert, Principal

Chaplain's Corner

Many blessings to the students and families for the second half of the school year.

Course Selections for Current MMM Students

Course selections for grade 10 and 11 students at MMM will take place at the beginning of March. Students will be responsible for entering their course requests into their myBlueprint educational planner. Students will meet with their Teacher Advisor (TA) and review their desired course selections for the 2020 - 2021 school year in March. We encourage students to have conversations with their family members helping them to identify the best course of action. More detailed information about this process will be communicated mid-February.

Japan March 2020 Trip

The next parent meeting for the Japan Trip will be on Wednesday, February 19th @ 6:00 PM here at MMM in the Learning Commons. This parent meeting is very important as we will be discussing pre-departure information. It is also an opportunity for you to meet the other teacher chaperones. This will also be the night we will have a lawyer present to notarize the travel consent forms free of charge to you. More details about this night will be given closer to the meeting date. If you have any questions please contact Miss. Prasad (jaylyn.prasad@ecsd.net)

School Council

Our school council is seeking parents to volunteer to serve on the school council board. Commitment is typically one evening meeting per month as well as time associated with council activity. The council works with school leadership in an advisory capacity and is an integral part of the culture at MMM.

One function of the council is raising funds to support school initiatives and the purchase of resources such as computer equipment. This is done through direct fundraising activities as well as a casino. The society is granted a casino every two years, and the next casino is slated for the fall of 2020. Currently the society does not have a casino chair in place and one is required to move forward with the casino this fall.

The next School Council Meeting is at 7:00pm on February 19. Please consider attending. Contact the council via email mmm.schooladvisorycouncil@gmail.com

Parent information session

In the MMM Learning Commons on February 25 @ 7:00 pm

Join Addictions Counsellor, Erin Black for a discussion on youth vaping. Topics will include trends, indicators of problematic substance use and approaches to engage and support your students.

MMM Robotics

On Jan 11 2020, MMM Robotics teams, Storm 1 (Thomas, William, Garrett, Hayden) & Storm 2 (Hannah, Mike, Saul, Colin, Nathan) competed in the VEX Robotics Provincial Tune-up competition at Archbishop Jordan Catholic School. The teams spent 3 months building the advanced robots to complete tasks in the Tower TakeOver challenge this year. Despite all odds against being beginners, our teams competed in all rounds and Storm 1 made it to the Quarter Final. Our next VEX robotics competition for 2020-21 will be in June. For now, we'll have fun building battlebots.
