Life

  • his father (Ricardo Cervini) was an apostolic treasurer
  • he came to Rome after the accession of Clement IIV, in 1523
  • Paul III (succeeded Clement IIV) appointed Marcellus to prothonotary apostolic and papal secetary
  • he became cardinal priest of the title of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme
  • Julius III died and Marcellus filled his place

He was not even the Pope for a year

This is Marcellus' tomb; located in the grottoes of St.Peter's Basilica in Vatican City

Emperor had instructed that the cardinals not let him be elected

He died after only 22 days of being pope due to illness
