Words From The Chair

Kernesa Samana / 2020 THE Ohio WiNUP Chapter Chair

"What a month! I feel like I have experienced every emotion over the last 30 days- including frustration, anger and despair. I’m deeply affected by the recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and George Floyd and countless other African Americans. Being bi-racial, I have experienced aggressions and micro-aggressions based on my race. These experiences have formed who I am – in good and bad ways. I remember at a young age being curious about why my dad didn’t go to my mom’s parents’ house, and having my mom explain racism and her family’s disapproval of my dad. Learning that some people would feel different about me because of the color of my skin saddened me, surprised me and quite frankly, made me distrustful. For me, these experiences and messages manifested in anger and that was how I was showing up in both my work and home life. It was not until I realized the connection between those experiences and my behavior that I was able to start processing my past and progressing towards a new me.

So why are we talking about race in a WiNUP newsletter? WiNUP is a professional development focused organization, which means we support and encourage our members to self-reflect and grow. Because our race is a part of our identify and not something we check at the door when we come to work; it’s important that we understand how race affects ourselves and our interactions with others. One way to start understanding the impact of race is to listen and value the experiences of others. When we are able to appreciate and respect the differences between our experiences and the experiences of others, then we begin to foster compassion and understanding. Everyone can grow if we listen and learn from each other.

If you are looking for voices to listen to, I was impacted by the authenticity in the video “Hear Me” from Korn Ferry, and I highly recommend it.

We have also included an article in this newsletter written by Kelly Stroud, and her story really resonated with me. This month’s song choice is Rise Up by Audra Day. It’s a reminder that despite the challenges we face, we must continue to rise up. If you are not familiar with Maya Angelou’s iconic poem “Still I Rise”, I highly recommend checking that out as well.

Raise your voice. Share your story. Listen, Learn and Grow."

If you have a song that moves you - send it to me, I may include it in a future newsletter!

The session was on the Power of Our Strengths using CliftonStrengths Finder Assessment for our 17 mentees! They had close to 30 participants on the phone! WOW! What an energized event! Special guests in attendance were Velda Otey, Kernesa Samana and Amy Dellenbach. #2020Winupmentoringprogram #womenhelpingwomen

Overall, Brittany Noland and Jacquie Weyers felt like the event was successful and hope that everyone was able to gain valuable information to help them wherever they are at in their self-journey. The event featured presenters who each have built their own business in their respective areas. They are collecting information from each presenter to include in the slide deck that they will send out to attendees in the near future. If there is anyone who was unable to attend, they can share with them as well. Just reach out to Jacquie Weyers and Brittany Noland – they will make sure to get you a copy.
