About the Workshop

With a vision to bring a generational change, the Ervis Blue Workshop aims to not just educate the youth, but to inspire the children between the age group of 6 to 18 years to interact, consume and dispose plastic in a responsible and sustainable way.

We aim to...

  • Create a platform where the youth can devise ideas, strategies and solutions that can contribute to reducing plastic debt and plastic pollution.
  • Act as a medium for children to implement the ideas, based on the available resources and feasibility.
  • Engage children in educational and hands-on activities that will create an all-round awareness and understanding of the existing problem of plastic.

Students engaged in guided discussions and hands-on, fun and engaging activities that tickled their creative-bone to innovate and brainstorm solutions to tackle the plastic pollution crisis.

Children were screened a short documentary by Plastic Oceans and several videos that gave them a global understanding of the adverse impact plastic has on the oceans and the animals that live within.

Reflections

The students engaged in an insightful discussion to reflect some of their key takeaways from the videos. They also understood the eminent role they play as the future generation in solving one of the biggest crisis that plagues our environment today.

Q. How does plastic get into our oceans?

A. "The Plastic we use and dispose off in dustbins, is then disposed by the garbage trucks in the landfills and water bodies. From there it spreads and reaches our oceans."

Q. What does business and industry need to do to help our plastic pollution problem?

A. "Businesses and industries need to find an alternative to plastic and minimise their overall plastic use. They should also recycle the existing plastic to re-create raw materials for their use."

Q. What does government need to do to help our plastic pollution problem?

A. "The government should put a stop on the production and use of single-use plastic.They should also organise awareness events to educate people about the harmful causes of plastic. They should set-up more recycling centres across the country."

Q. What scene from the film most personally affected you? Why?

A. "We were personally affected by the scene where the seal got stuck in the plastic rope and a man saved him at the right time from being strangled to death."

Q. What are some ways we can galvanize our community to solve our plastic pollution problem?

A. "We can galvanize the community by making posters, banners and giving real life examples. We can also organise workshops to educate the people about the harmful effects of plastic.We should also encourage them to use alternatives to plastic such as, cloth bags, steel bottles etc."

THE SUPERHEROES OF GRADE 5

Activity: Quick Plastic Audit

Students were asked to conduct a plastic audit a week before the workshop, to assess the plastic consumption patterns in their community. In groups, children shared startling facts and interesting experiences that helped them get a first-hand understanding of the problem.

Activity: Defeating the villain Plastic

The students of Grade 5 put on their capes for the day and brainstormed innovations and ideas that can help save the world from the villainous Plastic.

" Once upon a time there was a village. All the people were living very happily. After a few days, one group of magicians came and left behind loads of plastic bottles, plastic bags, plastic cans etc., from which a monster emerged. The monster was called the 'Plastic Boy.' He destroyed all the houses in the village. The people were very upset and half of them migrated to the neighbouring villages. The people decided to call out to their superhero, who taught all of them the power of the paper. He told everyone that the village must unite and make so many paper bags that the monster gets defeated. The village together made so many paper bags and started using it, finally defeating the 'Plastic Boy.' "

" Once when we went to the sea, we found something very shocking! Very tiny pieces of plastic (also known as microplastics) and dead bodies of fishes were seen scattered all over the beach. This was very shocking for us because the sea was our life. So we decided to form a group, the 'Cravengers', to save our oceans. We went from school to school and took workshops which helped educate people about the harmful effects of plastic and in turn reduce their use. But someone was waiting for us - the 'Plastic Monster.' So, we called upon the strongest members of our group - 'Mr. Jute,' and 'Mr. Cotton.' They helped us in replacing all plastic items with items of Jute and Cotton. We were successful in defeating the 'Plastic Monster.' "

Activity: Designing Community Awareness Campaigns

The students were asked to prepare a plan on how they will approach each section of their community and educate the people about the importance of sustainable plastic consumption and disposal and waste management. Children took to using creative mediums such as creating posters, banners, movie scripts, theater plays, social media posts and comic strips.

Scene 1: We all enjoy to go boating, fishing or even going to the beach. Don't we? We all find it very beautiful and attractive or relaxing. But do we know the sad truth? Here is a short story...

Scene 2: The usage of plastic is so much that we are finding plastic where we can't even think of its presence. We found plastic in the deepest parts of the oceans where even human beings can't reach, and only hi-tech underwater cameras can.

Scene 3: Because of us many animals, birds and marine creatures are getting badly affected. They are being choked and they are losing their lives. Only because of us! And we humans...are living peacefully.

Activity: Organising Plastic-Free Events in the School

The students of Grade 7 and 8 were asked to plan the details for organising different events in their school, while ensuring that no items of plastic were being used. The events included - Annual Day Function, Fun Fair, Sports Day, Farewells, Camping Trips, Children's Day, Teachers Day, Independence Day and Republic Day celebrations.

Plastic-Free Teacher's Day Celebrations

- Event organised by Hriday, Dhyaan, Harshil. Vishnu and Jhanvi

  • Gifts to be given to the teachers will not be put in plastic bags. Instead, they will be packed in paper bags.
  • Instead of plastic bottles, water will be served in glass bottles.
  • Chairs placed will be made of wood, and not plastic.
  • Props that will be used for dance and drama performances will be made of old newspapers and waste materials / plastic.
  • Snacks will be served in paper plates, with wood or steel cutlery.
  • Drinks will be served in paper glasses.
  • No one will be allowed to bring polythene bags to the event.
  • During the competition, the judges should only use metal point pens or pencils.
  • Lights which will be used should be made of glass.
  • Carpets should not be stuck with cello-tape.
  • The gifts that will be given to the teachers and students should not be made of plastic.
  • Fun activities should not use plastic. Instead should reuse waste plastic and paper items.
  • The banner should be either projected or made of paper.
  • Dustbins too should be made of steel and not plastic. Alternatively, waste cardboard boxes can be used as bins.

Activity 2: Social Media Awareness Posters

The students of Grade 7 and 8 found an effective and a positive way to use social media by designing creative campaigns, with catchy and informative captions and hard-hitting visuals, to spread the message on the plaguing problem of plastic.

plastic-free guidebooks

The students of Grade 6, 7 and 8 created guidebooks to educate people and spread awareness about the adverse effects of using plastic. The creatively designed books which included facts, powerful visuals and the actions that we as a society need to take to tackle and end plastic pollution.

Reimagining a World Without Plastic

The students of Grade 5 to 8 were asked to imagine a world where plastic was never invented. They were then asked to recreate scenes from their daily lives, and how they would go about doing their daily chores without plastic!

A world without plastic would be....

" Imagine waking up at 6 AM and going to the bathroom for brushing your teeth. But there is no plastic brush. So you have to brush with a bamboo stick and charcoal. After brushing, you go to have a bath, but you have to use either a shower or a steel bucket and mug instead of a plastic bucket and mug. After bathing you get dressed up and go to comb your hair. But you have to use a wooden comb. After which you have to wear your ID card which you see is made of metal. Just by seeing the morning routine you have seen how different yet easy life can be without plastic.

" One fine day I woke up and realised that plastic was just a dream. I went to the bathroom, lifted my wooden brush and brushed my teeth. I went to the toilet and got ready to bath. I lifted the steel mug and dipped it into the steel bucket. After I had a bath, I opened my wooden almirah and took out my clothes. I lifted my cloth bag and then started leaving for school. I walked to my school and looked at my wooden watch. I rushed towards my school and sat in my class I took out my pouch and my pencil."
