The Best Of What Canada Has To Offer By: Kirat

Canadian Sports: Basketball

Basketball is a Canadian Sport, it was invented by Dr. James Naismith in 1891 in Al-monte Ontario. James was a physical education teacher at the International YMCA Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts. Basketball was first played with peach baskets, hence the name (Syrett). Even though Basketball was created in Canada, there were only 2 Canadian basketball teams: the Toronto Raptors and the Vancouver Grizzlies but, the NBA relocated the Vancouver Grizzlies to Memphis which then made the Toronto Raptors the only Canadian team in the NBA (Francis).

This is very important to all Canadians, it shows that we created such a wonderful sport and how people all over the world are playing a sport that originated in Canada. I do think basketball should be valued by Canadians and not just Canadians, everybody should value it. It is important to me because basketball is my favourite sport and many others too.

Celebrations: Canada Day

Canada Day is an day where we celebrate when Canada was created. On July 1st, 1867 the British North America Act ( now known as Constitution Act 1867) created Canada. July 1st is a day of celebration since 1868. On July 1st 1967, it was the 100th anniversary and Queen Elizabeth II participated in the ceremony and in 1981, we started to shoot fireworks which is still a tradition today. This year it will be Canada's 150th anniversary! ("History of Canada Day")

Canada Day is important to me because Canada is where i have lived my whole life and celebrating when Canada was created is the least we can do to show out respect to this country. In my opinion, all Canadians have to show some type of value and respect to the country we live in. I think something as simple as hanging a Canada flag on your car is showing respect.

Diversity in Canada

Canada is one of the most diverse countries in the world, in Canada one out of 5 people are foreign-born and in the span of 2006-2011 almost 1.2 million foreign born people immigrated to Canada. Canada gets immigrants from many places and countries but Asia is the largest source of immigrants. About two-thirds of Canada are Christians (“Immigration and Ethnocultural Diversity in Canada.”)

In my opinion this is very good for the country, many people feel safe living here because Canada supports diversity and immigrants. I value this because my parents were immigrants and if they weren't able to come here, then I wouldn't have either, so I really respect the immigration system.

This is all why I feel like Canada is the best country and these are the reasons to support my opinions, we invented a major sport: basketball, we celebrate Canada day, and Canada is very diverse.
