On the tenth day of Christmas...

...we learned to adapt to change

This Christmas, we're dishing out bite-size, top tips to remind us of the importance of play and realise just how many skills can be developed along the way.

Skill 9: Flexibility

Top tip:

Introduce new activities and challenges to children regularly so that they get used to change and learn how to adapt

This needs to be done within the context of giving children time to develop their skills, which may mean revisiting the same topic over a few sessions.

To achieve these twin aims, introduce small, progressive changes to engage and excite the children. This can be as simple as adjusting the aim of a task, the type of equipment used, the level of challenge or the groupings. You could even consider changing the environment, e.g. taking sessions outside (weather permitting), or adjusting the structure of the session.

Remember to role model the behaviours we are trying to develop, by showing positivity in how you react to change.

real play supports families to play and learn together. Not only does it allow families precious time to bond and share moments of pure fun and joy, it also provides them with the skills they need to be a healthy and active unit.
