In describing our life in God, Jesus said, ‘Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent’ John 17.3 NIV.

They know each other and become one

This kind of knowing is the knowing that a husband and wife experience. It is knowing that is one spirit and one flesh that is a replication of the life of the trinity.

The bread and the wine become our person.

This ‘knowing’ is not knowing about or possessing information on. This is the kind of knowing in which a husband and wife ‘know’ each other. It’s union of being in spirit, soul and body. It is the kind of knowing of which the archetype is the ‘knowing’ that the trinity have of each other. It’s a ‘knowing of being’ that has nothing to do with the law or the letter and the citing of proof texts. This kind of knowing is the knowing of the Son for the Father and the Father for the Son. It’s the ‘knowing’ that is ours in our new covenant union with God. It’s the knowing Jesus gave us in saying, ‘This is my body.’ In His body we are one with Him in the Spirit.

Christ in you, Christ as you, Christ your life: The Spirit of Jesus expressed as you.

Subsequently Paul declared the substance of the gospel to be ‘Christ in you’ and the living of the gospel as ‘Christ our life.’ John recalled that Jesus urged us to ‘Realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you’ John 14.20 NIV. According to our Lord and the apostles teaching our life in God and the accurate understanding of this life are entirely the result of our union with God achieved on our behalf by divine enterprise that Paul called ‘the plan.’ Our part in being received into it is to agree with the truth of it.

What belongs to Jesus belongs to you

Thomas Torrance writes,“Of quite fundamental importance .. were the words of our Lord reported by St Luke and St Matthew: ‘All things have been delivered to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father; and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and any one to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.’

The Father knows that Son and the Son knows the Father.

Careful examination disclosed that the mutual relation of knowing between the Father and the Son, .. involved a mutual relation of being between them as well, and not only between the eternal Son and the Father but between the incarnate Son and the Father. [Jesus makes this knowing your knowing and your experience of God.'

This implies that we are given access to the closed circle of divine knowing between the Father and the Son only through cognitive union with Christ, that is only through an interrelation of knowing and being between us and the incarnate Son, although in our case this union is one of participation through grace and not one of nature.

This stress on cognitive union with the incarnate Son of the Father was greatly reinforced by Pauline teaching about adoption and union with Christ and Johannine teaching about mutual indwelling between us and Christ. .. The mutual relation of knowing and being between the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ constitutes the ontological ground for our knowing of God.” (1)

Since the cross we and our Father are one. This ‘being’ is the ground of our knowing God, our union with God and our union with each other. Thus John reports Jesus’ statement that the real gospel is Christ come in our flesh; Christ incarnated and Christ manifested as each of us – together with the warning that any dilution of this truth comes from the spirit of anti-christ.

But wait. There's more!. As the new Eve you have come from the side of the New Adam. You are a manifestation of His life in your individuality and uniqueness. This is the new and living way in which you are of the Body of Christ.
