DECREASING CREDIT CARD DECLINES TO REDUCE AIR TRAVEL SPEND A Travel and Transport Case Study

Credit card declines were high for this insurance firm's travel bookings. This caused issues, because when credit cards were declined, it would stop the travel approval process and tickets didn’t get issued. As a consequence, air travel costs went up, as fares had increased by the time they went to book again. The whole process was labor intensive and cumbersome.

Credit card declines were 4.3% of net tickets

Target

Reduce the number of credit card declines by 50%.

What we did

  • Created a preview report of the past week’s credit card declines including name of traveler and details.
  • Sent to travel manager weekly for review.
  • Travel manager reached out to travelers to explain the new credit card decline process and explain that the link is secure and easy to use.
  • Travel manager sent communications out explaining the new secure process.

Results

The travelers' credit card declines became visible and managers at the insurance company were held accountable for their department.

The travel manager communicated savings to the company executives and they were very satisfied with the results.
