11 Jan, 2017 Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Mr. Oliver J. M. Chinganya, Director of African Centre for Statistics (ACS), United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), today announces the return of ECA statistical database – ECA Stats, ushering in a new hope for a one stop repository for economic and social statistics in Africa. With ECA Stats, decision makers doesn’t need to have a bad feeling about making policy in the dark sight anymore. Instead, policy may be guided by fact and quantitative evidences from multiple layer of topics and data. ECA Stats provides users and policy makers with timely, high quality data to make informed decisions on areas such as population, national accounts, education, agricultural, health, energy, etc., as well as indicators for monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). It’s a trap to think the SDG has too many targets to track. Monitoring the SDG is not a solo job, the entire continent has to come together and luke into innovative ways to strike back at the mounting challenges. The conscious for statistics has awakened in Africa, and the force is strong in pushing the continent into a new data revolution. Establishing a hub for economic and social data, and a collaboration of all statisticians and national statistics offices in Africa is our only hope.
