WHAT IS CCR5?

C-C chemokine receptor type 5

CCR5 is a protein that is found on white blood cell and is a big part of the immune system. The protein receives chemokines. Chemokines attrack white blood cells to areas of infection so they can fight it off.

Unfortunatley CCR5 is also used as a "landing pad" for the HIV virus. The virus hardly mimmicks a chemokine but is still able to bind to CCR5 and CXCR4 and infect cells.
CCR5 Delta-32

The CCR5 mutation delta-32 makes the protein far smaller and no longer on the outside of white blood cells. This mutation is extremely convenient for those who have it. It prohibits the HIV virus from binding to cells. This prevents diseases like Aids and Viremia

WHERE DID THIS MIRACLE MUTATION COME FROM?

Bubonic Plague

Genetisicts traced the origin of this mutation to the bubonic plague while looking at common mutations of people who seemed to be immune to the black death. Chances are the mutation didn't make people immune to the plague but something else that was common in Eastern Europe, smallpox.

THE FUTURE FOR CCR5

The delta-32 mutation is obviously a very important mutation for the future of genetics and humanity. One day the mutation will hopefully be given to everyone but science is not there yet.
