Brookes Newsletter WEEKLY NEWS & EVENTS TAKING PLACE AT BROOKES |2.12.19 | Issue 1920.5

Dear Parents,

Last week was very busy for with lots of school trips! Year 5 and 6 visited the Military Museum in Bury and Years 9 and 11 traveled to London to see the show 'Wicked'. Staff have been discussing how our new Behaviour Policy seems to be making a difference already with standards in behaviour, punctuality, appearance, personal organisation and quality of homework. I want to thank parents who have been looking through the students planners in Years 3 and above and discussing how each week has been going. This develops a 'partnership' between parents and staff to support our students.

Christmas does seem to come around faster every year and here at Brookes Christmas has come with Nativity rehearsals and with the PTA helping to decorate the hall. We are all into the spirit of Christmas ready for this week's Early Years nativity and next week's Years 1 - 4 Nativity. I look forward to seeing you at our school events over the next two weeks.

Kind regards,

Mr Ellis

Year 3 and 4

The children were excited and had lots of questions about the rainforest following the movie. They were incredibly well behaved throughout and has a wonderful time.

Making Christmas Biscuits!

This week the children have enjoyed making Christmas biscuits. They looked delicious and the children got to taste test them at the end.

Netball

Last Wednesday's fixture was a fantastic affair for the Brookes netball team. The U11 girls were joined by Meralina and Ciaran to play a 5 a-side match against Riddlesworth Hall. The game got off to an excellent start with Emily R scoring the first goal of the match. She continued fantastic shooting throughout the game and scored 8 out of the 9 goals with Ciaran scoring a brilliant goal in the 3rd quarter. The whole team played with impressive teamwork and they really showed a great use of court as they moved so quickly into the scoring third each time. Charlotte moved around the court with great ease and was marking her defender brilliantly throughout. The whole team showed really good progression of skills.

Brookes' U9 netball team's match against Riddlesworth Hall was a display of courage in the face of adversity. It was a bitterly cold afternoon which no amount of running around on the court could diminish. We faced a strong opposition who, from the start, took control of the game despite some fantastic marking from Maria. Very soon we were three goals down. However, hope didn't disappear and through perseverance and determination, the Brookes girls and boys turned the game around and began to put up a battle. The ball headed towards our end more frequently in the final quarter of the match, and Rosa managed to get a few shots in, unluckily not managing to score. In that final quarter, the players demonstrated true Brookes spirit, and although we still lost the match, every player felt pleased that they had pulled together and worked as a team.

Cross Country Results

Will found his groove against some seriously stiff competition. After a fairly intense 10 minutes, Will came in on an amazing sprint finish and was placed 65th. Although he did not qualify this time, he gave it his absolute all. Jonny was up next and again the standard of running by all the boys was astounding. Jonny had a great start and was positioned at about mid group at the half way point. Over the next 2000 metres he managed to gain several positions and came in in 24th place! This means he qualifies for the next round. Both boys tried incredibly hard and both families were extremely proud of their efforts.

Forest School

In Forest School the children have learnt how to whittle wood. They used a vegetable peeler to whittle away the bark and wood. The children listened to the 'Tool Talk' explaining how to be safe when using this tool. They loved looking at the smooth wood under bark and the different colours they found.

Year 5 and 6 School Trip

Year 5 and 6 visited the Suffolk Regiment Museum on 27th November to support this term's learning about the First World War. They had the opportunity to hear about the bravery of some of the local men and women and see the medals they were awarded in recognition of this. They also had the opportunity to try on some of the uniform from the time, handle other artefacts (including trench art and weaponry) and speak to the volunteers about the exhibits.
