Forklift & Powered Industrial Truck Safety Program

Forklifts and Powered Industrial Trucks come in many types and designations for various job requirements including outdoor use, indoor use and use in hazardous locations. Ensure the forklift being utilized is of the proper designation for the job task being performed.

The OSU Forklift & Powered Industrial Truck safety program requires all operators to complete classroom and hands-on practical training prior to operating any type of forklift or industrial truck. Classroom training can be completed in person or through the OSU EHS online training portal.

Practical training should evaluate the operator under typical working conditions and tasks and include"

  • Performing pre-use inspections
  • Safe operation of the vehicle
  • Handling a load
  • Maneuverability

Refresher training should occur at least every three years or anytime changes in the work environment, a near miss, or accident occurs.

Prior to the use of a forklift/industrial truck, a pre-use inspection must be completed to ensure safe operation of the equipment at all times.

Operation of a forklift/industrial truck must be done in a safe manner to prevent injury to the operator or pedestrians in the area; and to prevent damage to property during operation.

Examples of safe operation include

  • Not riding on any part of the forklift
  • Traveling the proper direction on inclines
  • Observing traffic regulations
  • Not overloading the forklift
