Bowdoin Women's Rugby 2019 season preview

The Bowdoin women’s rugby team kicks off its 2019 season on Saturday at home against Roger Williams.

2018 Recap

Coach Marybeth Mathews’ team opened the fall campaign with a 3-1 record, with their lone loss coming to Tier 1 opponent West Chester. The Polar Bears just missed out on a postseason berth with a late season loss to Colby-Sawyer. Bowdoin had four players named NIRA All-Americans; Sara Nelson, Satya Kent, Sophia Karris and Elizabeth D’Angelo.

2019 Preview

Despite the loss of All-Americans D’Angelo and Kent, both Nelson (scrumhalf) and Karris (fullback) enter their sophomore campaigns with high expectations while Molly Petronzio (wing/flyhalf) also returns to the squad this fall. The Polar Bears will be captained by Claire Carges and Mackenzie Philbrick this season while Ashlynn Autrey and Brooke Berry will look to make an impact on this year’s team.

On the Schedule

Bowdoin will play a quartet of home matches at Pickard Field this fall, beginning with Roger Williams on September 7. The Polar Bears will then host Colby Sawyer in a rematch of one of last year’s toughest contests on September 14. After three away games to close out September, the Polar Bears will face some tough competition down the stretch in October and November as they host Norwich (Oct. 5) and Vassar (Oct. 19) before heading to away matches at UNE (Oct. 26) and West Chester (Nov. 2).
