My Best Friend's Exorcism - Grady Hendrix - ISBN: 978-59474-862-2
1988. Charleston, South Carolina. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade. But after an evening of skinny dipping goes disastrously wrong, Gretchen begins to act...different. She's moody. She's irritable. And bizarre incidents keep happening whenever she's nearby. Abby's investigation leads her to some startling discoveries- and by the time their story reaches its terrifying conclusion, the fate of Abby and Gretchen will be determined by a single question: Is their friendship powerful enough to beat the devil? Like an unholy hybrid of Beaches and The Exorcist, My Best Friend's Exorcism blends teen angst, adolescent drama, unspeakable horrors, and a mix of '80s pop songs into a pulse pounding supernatural thriller.
Who Will Like It?
If you usually enjoy humor and coming of age stories, I think you will definitely enjoy this book. The supernatural aspects of it are also well balanced, meaning that fans of fantasy as well as those who prefer more realistic stories will enjoy reading Abby and Gretchen's terrifying experiences. Lastly, anyone who is a horror buff or a total 80's kid is sure to get a kick out of Hendrix's second novel.
Things to Look Out For:
- 80's references
- Feminine v Masculine (the females in this novel are not perfect ladies, and the contrast of feminine expectations and these girl's realities is very interesting)
- Social Status, economical status, and the gaps between the classes
- Childhood v maturity (wouldn't be a coming of age story without this last bit now would it?)
What are Others Saying?
Hendrix's novel has been getting mostly 4-5 (out of 5) stars. Most complement the horror aspect as well as the balance of humor and adolescent drama. The main drawbacks I could find was that the build up to the actual possession was a bit slow, but from what I have read this doesn't seem too bad. Most reviewers agree that you'll laugh and cry at the same time. And then you'll sleep with the lights on.
