Lyric #1 Harry Truman:

Harry S. Truman was an American politician who served as the 33rd President of the United States after FDR died in 1945.He was responsible for dropping the atomic bombs on Japan and ending World War II. Truman initiated the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe after the war. During his second term, he brought the United States into the Korean War. This war is why Korea is still divided today. Billy Joel most likely included Harry Truman in the song because he caused a lot of things to happen good and bad during the cold war. Definitely feeding to the fire!

Lyric #2 H-Bomb:

The device is colloquially referred to as a hydrogen bomb or, an H-bomb, because it employs the fusion of isotopes of hydrogen. The first full scale thermonuclear test was carried out by the United States in 1952. This bomb is a thousand times more powerful than the atom bomb used on Japan in WWII. Billy Joel most likely added this event into his song because this bomb caused a lot of conflict and tension in the world at the time. The fire is getting bigger.

Lyric #3 Vaccine:

The vaccine to the dreaded disease polio was discovered by Jonas Salk in 1952 and distributed to the world. A vaccine is a biological preparation that provides active acquired immunity to a particular disease. Billy Joel most likely included this into the song because it was a really big event in world history at that time. Polio could finally be cured.

Lyric #4 Joseph Stalin:

Joseph Stalin was the dictator of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) from 1929 to 1953. Under Stalin, the Soviet Union was transformed from a peasant society into an industrial and military superpower. However, he ruled by terror, and millions of his own citizens died during his brutal reign. He died in 1953. The leader of a major world power died. This was most likely included in the song because his death will cause chaos in Russia adding fire to the flames.

Disneyland Park, originally Disneyland, is the first of two theme parks built at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, California, opened on July 17, 1955. It is the only theme park designed and built under the direct supervision of Walt Disney. An interesting and little-known fact is that although Disney forbade the serving of alcoholic beverages in Disneyland, he had a private suite in the park where bartenders would serve drinks to his personal guests. This was most likely included by Billy Joel because this was a huge event within the united states. You could finally meet your favorite Disney characters face to face.

Lyric #6 JFK Blown Away:

John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, was assassinated on November 22, 1963 at 12:30 p.m Central Standard Time in Dallas, Texas while riding in a motorcade in Dealey Plaza. He was shot by Lee Harvey Oswald. Oswald was arrested eighty minutes later after killing a Dallas police officer. He was captured hiding in a movie theatre. Joel most likely added this lyric because this event caused a lot of conflict in the U.S. government at that time.

Lyric #7 Birth control:

Birth Control became an issue with the advent of the birth control pill. Later, abortion was legalized. This was most likely included in Billy Joel's song because it was a big controversy when it was first introduced which helped build the flames of the fire of conflict.

Lyric #8 Ho Chi Minh:

Ho Chi-Minh was the leader of the Communist North Vietnamese, who first fought the French and then the Americans. Leader of North Vietnam During the Vietnam War. This was most likely included in the song because this man caused the whole Vietnam War, a major conflict, to happen

Lyric #9 Watergate:

Supporters and staff of U.S. President Richard Nixon were accused of breaking into the Democratic headquarters in the Watergate hotel. Nixon tried to cover up the fact and soon he forced to resign from office because of that cover up. Several of his staff members were sent to prison as a result of the affair. This was included because this was a huge scandal that caused problems within the US.

Lyric #10 Wheel of Fortune:

America’s game was founded in January 6, 1975. This show brought many families together a night to watch the competitive hangman like word game. This was most likely included because it easily brought all kinds of people together.

Lyric #11 AIDS:

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) disease started to spread throughout the world. This was a major problem in the world because this disease will kill.

Lyric #12 Crack:

A potent form of the highly addictive drug cocaine called "crack" or "rock" had been rapidly spreading in the United States, especially in troubled neighborhoods.
