The start of Dear John is set in North Carolina during the summer and throughout the book transitions to the area where John is deployed.
Genre of the story is Romance.
Dear John is a heart warming story about two young adults that fall in love at the most inconvenient time. John and Savannah meet one summer day at the beach when she accidentally drops her bag off the pier. John and Savannah run into many fun adventures and messy conflicts throughout the story.
John Tyree has a strong exterior but just like everyone else he has a softer side to him that only a few people ever get see. He has the reputation of a town punk due to his previous bar fights and resilient personality. In the book John is portrayed as a quiet sort of loner but once he sets his eyes on Savannah his tough guy persona begins the melt away. Savannah Curtis is a well known girl around town for her outgoing personality and warming smile. She is the ideal college student with her witty remarks that rope John in. The exterior of Savannah matches up perfectly with her personality. She is a tall, slim blonde who is very generous and caring. Savannah has an interest in individuals with mental disabilities so once she meets Johns father she in intrigued by his autistic indications. On the outside the two seem to clash but once they get a peak of what is inside neither of the two can get enough.
The theme of Dear John is true love comes with many sacrifices and hardships. These problems can shake the clouds from whats really hiding behind the couple. Either they will fight for one another or fall hard. This theme is developed through out the entire story. The internal conflict in the story is love, Savannah and John are faced with a problem when John is deployed into a dangerous area. The external conflict between John and Savannah is the war the John has been thrown into. At the beginning of the deployment the two exchange letter to one another through mail but after many months John begins to get fewer and fewer of Savannah's letters. Then one day John receives one saying that Savannah has decided to break off the relationship. Due to this conflict the two are faced to go their separate ways.
The main conflict in the story is when Savannah sends her last letter saying she thinks it would be best to go their separate ways. Once John returns from the war due to an injury the two are brought back together but a new conflict has surfaced, Savannah has married Tim the father of Allen the young boy she used to take care of. This conflict is resolved once Tim passes away due to a terminal illness. When this passing happens John and Savannah have no reason to stay apart.
Savannah: "Two weeks together, that's all it took, two weeks for me to fall in love with you." pg. 57. This shows how easily the two connected with one another.
John: "So there's something else I wanna tell you. Right before everything went black, you wanna know the very last thing that entered my mind? You." pg.236. This explains how important Savannah was to John and how she had a huge impact on her.

I would recommend this book because it is an accurate description of the hardships couples face while also giving the resolution to the problems. The book relates to a wide variety of people ranging in different ages. I believe that anyone who reads the book will be intrigued by the love story that flows throughout the book while also keeping them on their toes with the use of foreshadowing and anticipation of what the couple might face next. I enjoyed the whole book and did not find any parts that I disapproved of. I think the author did a wonderful job with how he kept the book flowing. Three words to describe the book would be: Compassion, Hardship, and Trust.
