WELCOME TO THE DMC Home of the IoT Tribe - Connected Places Accelerator

This year's IoT Tribe, all about connected places, would usually have seen a tribe of startups land in sunny Barnsley in the north of England to be greeted with a typical Yorkshire 'Eyup', (hello) followed by an immediate offering of one of our very own 'Julie Coffee - or a strong mug of Yorkshire tea. But, don't worry, as a compromise we've put these insights together so that when you can eventually make the trip to us, you'll feel right at home. And we can always send a few treats your way to get a real feel of the place.

We're DMC: spread across two buildings, DMC 01 and DMC 02 overlook each other in the heart of our emerging Digital Campus. We offer high quality office space, co-working, a Maker Lab for innovation, and we're home to Enterprising Barnsley, the business support arm of Barnsley Council.

But we're more than that, we're a community of creative and digital people who think outside of the box. We collaborate and bring people together, boosting Barnsley's and Yorkshire's digital ecosystem.

We're also part of The SEAM - Barnsley's digital campus. A place to bring together education with Barnsley College, business and the public sector. It's a place of possibilities.

Meet the Team

At Enterprising Barnsley our team has a wide range of business support experience and comes from a range of different backgrounds such as tech, retail, finance, marketing, customer care, and business support. Each team member brings a unique set of knowledge and experience into the team which overall benefits our clients. To help you better understand our team’s strengths we’ve asked each a handful of our team members to provide a brief introduction.

Tracey Johnson - In 2015 I took over the DMC – and since then it’s been a fantastic rollercoaster bringing together exciting programmes, businesses and people as a lively and innovative community. I love that we work with ambitious entrepreneurs and that we get to constantly learn from them and also from our relationships with other places. I’m most proud that I’m part of a team and community of people who aren’t afraid to say what they think, have ideas, get things done, and make Barnsley a better place. Twitter. - LinkedIn.

Ben Hawley - As a Business Start up Advisor at Enterprising Barnsley I’ve worked with over 300 business to help get up and running, and then grow through the early years of their business. Those businesses have ranged from lifestyle businesses such as dog walkers, right through to high growth businesses that have gone from 0 to 60FTE in 24 months. I love seeing people achieve their goals of starting a business, and if I can help them on the way, then I’m privileged to have been a part of it.

I feel we’re standing on the edge of something amazing. The next five years are an exciting time for Barnsley. By 2026, I think our tech sector will have grown around a central core of IoT technology and the knowledge brought by this growing sector will be introduced to our educational systems locally to support the future pipeline of talent and the next generation of entrepreneurs. - Twitter LinkedIn

Judy Sidebottom-- What motivates me is how our support helps to create good employment opportunities, and I particularly enjoy helping companies to recruit successfully.

The next 5 years will see us having a more attractive town centre, a vibrant digital economy and who knows, maybe a Premiership football team once again. Twitter - LinkedIn

Samantha Jones - I love making sure our customers are happy, and that we can enable a building that allows them to focus on their business without the hassle of worrying if the environment is right. I run on cups of tea. In 5 years, it would be nice to see The Seam, and DMC01,02, and maybe 03, leading the way, and being spoken about in the same sentences as other tech centres, across the world.

Julie Hine -- I’ve been at the DMC for over 4 years now, I came on a test trial through Launch Pad with my Coffee Cart and they’ve never managed to get shut of me since!

- I’m really lucky to see budding new businesses through to established entrepreneurs coming through the doors, I learn so much from my customers and have built up some amazing relationships. Twitter

Location Location location

Barnsley is famous for its markets - with a good selection of farm shops and regular markets where you can try and buy the areas excellent local produce. Our market has over 100 stalls located across two spaces offering you the freshest produce and only a 5 minute walk from the DMC. If you venture upstairs in the indoor market you’ll find yourself in our Market Kitchen. A completely new street food eating experience for Barnsley and an amazing venue for a quick lunch pitstop.

The town was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 when it was called Berneslai. During the 17th century, it developed into an important transportation centre, well-placed for traffic to London, Leeds, and Sheffield.

The town grew as a result of the traffic, and later developed into a centre for linen weaving, but Barnsley's history is perhaps most deeply rooted in the Industrial Revolution. Coal-mining and glass-making were at the heart of Barnsley's growth into an important 19th-century town. You can learn about Barnsley's history at the Experience Barnsley Museum.

Now the town is well on it's way on a path from coal to code with DMC at the heart of the journey.
