IMN-PN Updates

IMN-PN Indigenous Graduate Peer Mentors

The Indigenous Mentorship Network of the Pacific Northwest (IMN-PN) is looking for an Indigenous graduate student to engage other Indigenous students in our Network. Working closely with the IMN-PN Network Coordinator, the Peer Mentor will, at their home university:

  • Promote the IMN-PN among Indigenous undergraduate and graduate students
  • Help Indigenous students connect with the IMN-PN
  • Support the preparation and distribution of materials for recruitment, resource sharing and events (e.g., posters, short video clips, event posts on Facebook & Twitter)
  • Facilitate or support IMN-PN networking, mentorship and research training event

Term of Employment: 20 hours per month from September 2020 to April 2021

Hourly Wage: $26.08

Qualifications:

  • Dependable, well organized and able to meet deadlines – very important
  • Understanding of Indigenous students’ post-secondary experiences and needs
  • Interest in Indigenous research
  • Outgoing personality – enjoys working with people
  • Skilled in Word, Adobe, Facebook and Twitter (assets)

IMN-PN CALL FOR RESEARCH EXPERIENCES

  • Do you or your organization have any upcoming priority wellness-related research projects for which you require the assistance of an Indigenous research assistant/ student intern?
  • We are looking for opportunities for students! One of the funding opportunities available is the Research Experience Award, which provides $1,000-$2,000 (depending on level of study) to Indigenous students proposing to undertake a wellness-related research project initiated by and of interest to an Indigenous community or organization. These projects may involve, for instance, assisting with a community-level knowledge translation event, land-based research activity, community research engagement meeting, environmental scan or literature review. These research experiences are overseen by academic and community or organizational Mentors, who will provide guidance, supervision and mentorship to the Mentees.

Research Assistant (RA) - Institutional Community Engagement Assessment

  • The Community Engagement and Partnerships Executive Committee (CEPEC) helps UVic respond to the Strategic Framework and to community engagement and partnership elements of the Indigenous Plan, International Plan, and Strategic Enrolment Plan. CEPEC aims to assess UVic’s CUE assets through the CUE Assets project. In this project, CEPEC will complete The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Elective Community Engagement Classification. This institutional community engagement assessment will inform UVic’s emerging Community-University Engagement (CUE) Plan. Working alongside Dr. Tremblay and reporting to CEPEC, the Research Assistant will be responsible for completing The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Elective Community Engagement Classification. Through this project, the Research Assistant plays a critical role in helping to advance UVic’s community engagement efforts. Housing Director - Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society

  • Reporting to the Executive Director, the Housing Director (HD) will provide support to the Society’s House Managers related to operations, programming, staff training, emergency preparedness, and overall capacity development. The HD will perform a public relations role and create a community resources catalogue. The HD is also responsible to provide new housing staff with an orientation to the Society’s history and strategic directions, vision, mission, and values. Indigenous Alcohol Harm Reduction Program Manager - Aboriginal Coalition to End Homelessness Society

  • Reporting to the Executive Director, the IAHR Program Manager will provide full-time support, ensure day-to-day operations of the program are run in a professional and efficient manner with attention to confidentiality and compliance with the Society’s mission, vision, values, and practice. The IAHR Program Manager provides planning, coordination, and administration of the House. In addition, the IAHR Program Manager provides non- judgmental support, advocacy, information, and resource referrals to the House Cohort. The IAHR Program Manager maintains strong working relationships with and awareness of various groups within the community and has specific knowledge regarding available community resources. This position is required to work in a stressful environment, often dealing with crisis situations. The ability to function independently and frequently under pressure, while managing situations, including emergency situations, is an ongoing expectation. The IAHR Program Manager will recruit and begin to conduct intake and work with the ACEH’s Registered Nurse to coordinate the development of care plans, transition plans, Life Plan and personalized wellness plans to prepare the Cohort to transition into the residence in the fall.

POST DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN DECOLONIZING PRAXIS

  • The Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD), University of Victoria is seeking applications for a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship (PDF) in the area of decolonizing praxis within post-secondary environments, ideally starting on January 1, 2021. VNFC Co-Manager Aboriginal Childhood Interventions Services

  • Operating from an Indigenous world view and co-managing the Aboriginal Childhood Intervention Services Programs and will specifically focus on Aboriginal Supported Child Development Program (ASCD) and Ab. Speech & Language (ASLP). The Manger will carry out a variety of duties and work as part of the Management Team reporting directly to the Executive Director and/or Assistant Executive Director. All human research that is conducted by members of Island Health or that involves Island Health patients, facilities, residents, clients, staff, physicians, current data holdings, or other resources, requires research and ethical approval before it may begin, in accordance with Island Health's Research Ethics Review Policy.

Health Research Ethics Board (HREB)

• The HREB reviews behavioural studies that do not involve clinical interventions.

• Co-Chairs are responsible for reviewing all studies (1 week on/1 week off); Chairing HREB meetings; and providing an ethical lens and perspective on policy application within the Research Ethics and Compliance Office.

• Planned HREB meetings are usually held once every other month – at least 6 meetings per year, each meeting is about 1.5 hours; Ad-hoc meetings may occur.

• A stipend is offered to the successful candidate.

• Required free training for the position/on-boarding includes:

o Tri-Council Policy Statement on Research Ethics (TCSP 2 (2018) CORE online training module;

o San’yas Indigenous Cultural Safety Training;

o Island Health Certificate Information Management (CIM);

Call for Papers - Journal of Indigenous Social Development - Indigenous Communities and COVID-19: Impact and Implications

  • This special issue of the Journal of Indigenous Social Development focuses on the experiences of Indigenous communities during the COVID-19 pandemic and the short and long-term implications. We are particularly interested in papers that reflect the experiences of global Indigenous communities around issues related to, but not limited to: access to basic needs, such as food, water, shelter, etc., lack of access to healthcare or medical supplies; ongoing human rights violations, virus testing and contact tracing, vaccination testing and uptake of vaccination, community assets, cultural and linguistic responses to COVID-19 and cultural resiliency and strengths. Implications for community practice, education, and research are also welcomed. We also welcome essays that demonstrate reflexive practices and produce rich local and contextual knowledge. Because of the timeliness and urgency of this issue, we invite brief papers (under 2500 words).
