Aside from the many different ways they add substance and flavor to dishes, many health benefits, such as heart health, reducing cholesterol and help with blood pressure have people heading to the stores to buy more avocados.
So once they are in your store and departments, how do you keep them maximize the sales potential they offer?
Avocados have such huge sales potential, that they should be offered some additional space in your produce department. No more one basket displays that are seemingly lost in your tropical sections!
Take a look at the following display pictures for ideas and tips on selling more avocados:
MAKING AN IMPACT:
Now this is a statement display!
Highlighting avocados front and center in your department with a mass display is sure to get anyone's attention.
Nice impact display walking into the front door. Notice uniformity in all the boxes.
Neat & Clean
Notice all the stickers are facing down. This keeps eyes only on product and it's not blurred by ugly stickers.
END CAP DISPLAYS
BIN DISPLAYS
Don’t have an extra endcap or larger display space on your counters? No worries! Try using dry apple or watermelon bins and place them in your aisle!
Avocado and Tomatoes—perfect together!
Avocados lend themselves nicely with a variety of other department commodities. They look amazing next to the nice bright red tomatoes and onions. Both offer additional sales possibilities as well!
Ripe or Unripe—Offer both!!
Preconditioning
While it is best to offer both ripe and unripe fruit on your avocado displays, there are times when your fruit will come in hard and unripe.
To precondition fruit and set up riper boxes, follow these quick steps:
Pick how many boxes of fruit you want to ripen.
Take a banana, onion, tomato, or anything that gives off ethylene, and place it in the box with the fruit.
Cover with any plastic bag—something that will trap the ethylene in and place the box back in storage.
Depending on how fast you need or want fruit to ripen, you may also cut a few holes in the plastic to allow some of the gas to escape. Simple as that!
Note — be sure to monitor your preconditioning fruit to insure fruit is at the ripeness you want and doesn’t get overripe by keeping them covered.
Some more avocado merchandising tips:
1. Large displays sell fruit. We have had SO many responses from customers regarding the increases in sales once they have gone to a larger, more impactful display. This will work for you.
2. Whenever possible, try to stay consistent with sizing. Offering multiple sizes will sometimes confuse the customer and might leave you with a smaller size of fruit if the larger is sold at the same price.
3. Merchandise some paper bags next to your display to allow for consumers to ripen their own.
4. Remember when displaying fruit next to other products that give off ethylene, such as bananas, onions and apples, that this will speed up ripening of your avocados. This also goes for backroom storage.
5. Offer recipe ideas next to your avocado display.
6. Olive oil, tortilla chips, and garlic salt are nice grocery tie-ins for avocados
We hope you have enjoyed these displays and are ready to get started on your next avocado display.
