YOUR IMPACT GIVING TO UNIVERSITY OF HARTFORD FISCAL YEAR 2018

Investing today for a better tomorrow

Thank you to all alumni, friends, and families of the University of Hartford for your generous support in fiscal year 2018 (FY2018). Your investment ensures a better future for every one of our students and the communities around them. You make a world of difference by elevating the college experience and helping the University reach new heights.

FY2018, ending June 30, 2018: $14.6M in gift commitments from 6,902 alumni, friends, families, and organizations

KEEPING THE UHART EXPERIENCE ACCESSIBLE

For students with financial need, your gift is a life-changing opportunity. Our rich and diverse community includes students hailing from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds, the majority of whom would not be able to attend the University without assistance.

94% of undergraduate students benefit from scholarships and financial aid.

In FY2018, over 4,200 undergraduate students received assistance from donor-established scholarship funds and general aid, enabling them to pursue their passions and further achieve their academic goals. Annually, the University grants an average of over $95M in scholarship support and financial aid.

This scholarship has not only given me the chance to continue studying at The Hartt School but also has made it possible for me to pursue my dreams in America. This has truly been a life-changing experience and I know it will make a huge impact on my future. I hope that one day, I am able to give others opportunities, just as I was given.

MAKING AN IMMEDIATE IMPACT

Support to the UHart Impact Fund provided immediate and flexible resources to wherever it's needed most—from student scholarship support to hands-on learning and career development opportunities. Flexible funding for a variety of academic and student programs foster growth and enrich the overall UHart experience.

In education, business, science, and beyond, practical applications in real-world settings give students an advantage in career preparation, while making a difference in surrounding communities.

I have never felt more energized working on a class project.

Learning goes beyond the classroom. Students in the College of Arts and Sciences' School of Communication visited Stone Bridge Farm, a cranberry bog in Acushnet, Mass., to inform their multi-platform "Little Berry, Big Moments" advertising pitch for Ocean Spray. The trip gave them a first-hand experience in harvesting, farming, and distribution processes.

IMAGINATION MEETS INNOVATION

Your gifts are revolutionizing the University's classrooms, providing the resources, tools, and spaces students need to be creative, to discover, and to make the impossible, possible.

Funds supporting UHart's schools and colleges ensure that students have the most advanced technologies within their reach, with faculty scholars alongside to guide their research.

Whether it's vertical farming or building race car engines, giving robots human-like abilities or engineering creative solutions, your gifts are helping students reimagine a better world.

“We learned that by partnering with the farmers over time, we have engineered a farming solution that is resulting in permanent changes in the economy.” This past summer, engineering students and professors traveled to Kenya to help transform farming, building a utility trailer with locally sourced materials and installing a micro-irrigation system.

HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED

Your gifts support programs and extracurricular activities that further students' journeys towards success. The Women’s Advancement Initiative empowers and prepares future leaders through unique educational and skill-building opportunities.

My UHart journey helped me grow into an individual who is proud—proud to be a leader, who is motivated and willing to be the best version of herself.

Other programs, such as Dialogue, help students develop support networks, engage with faculty, and forge strong relationships with their cohorts, while the Center for Student Success offers academic and personal guidance for everything from individual tutoring to wellness support.

More than 100 student clubs and organizations, University centers, and departments give students myriad opportunities to make a difference through volunteering, gaining leadership experience, and developing the skills to succeed.

CHANGING LIVES AND BUILDING LEADERS

Thanks to your support, Hartford Athletics enjoyed a successful 2017-18 in the classroom and on the competition surface.

Our student-athletes captured the America East Walter Harrison Academic Cup, awarded to the athletics department with the highest overall grade point average, for the sixth time in the past seven years with an all-time record 3.37 GPA.

Women’s basketball competed for the conference championship, men’s basketball set a program record in Division I victories, and Hartford Baseball won its first-ever America East Championship and made its first NCAA Tournament appearance.

The University of Hartford has allowed me to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing Division I baseball. On and off the field, I have met some amazing people and made lifelong friendships. The coaches and professors challenge us to be our best every day and as a result, I have grown as a person, student, and athlete.

A TRADITION OF GIVING BACK

I support the University annually because there are individuals who have the motivation to obtain a degree but need additional support. Thanks to the University, I had the opportunity to graduate college without a huge financial burden.

Named for Bernard Rosen '61, M'66 for his longtime consistent giving, the Rosen Society honors supporters who give for five or more years. In FY2018, 1,469 Rosen Society members contributed $2.8M to the University.

LEAVING A LEGACY

A total of 213 alumni, friends, and families are members of the Founders' Planned Giving Society, paying it forward for future students by naming the University in their estate plans. In FY2018, members left legacies totaling nearly $6.5M, with over $48M in planned gift intentions.

I give back to honor my mother's memory and to enable others to receive what I received... I am forever filled with gratitude.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

To ensure students are prepared for a constantly evolving, fast-paced, and competitive world, our campus must also evolve and expand to educate and prepare the next generation of leaders.

Barney Expansion Project

Construction is currently underway after the successful completion of a $4.7M campaign. Fall 2019 will unveil an additional 10,000 square feet of high-tech classrooms, labs, and collaborative spaces.

The renovation will be a much-needed catalyst for faculty response to market demands. I want us to deliver the best curricular effectiveness set in a currently designed campus facility.

—Professor Bharat Kolluri, Department of Economics, Finance, and Insurance

Hartford Art School Atrium Project

Opened in October 2018, thanks to $1.4M in gifts, an inviting and enlarged atrium and gallery space welcomes talented creative minds and artists and introduces more community space for current students. Also a part of this project, the beloved Japanese garden, created by the late Professor Emeritus Chris Horton, was fully restored.
