RECAP OF 2018 INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE

From Elaine Champagne: It was truly a privilege to host the 16th International Conference on Children’s Spirituality at the Université Laval in Quebec City during this past summer 2018. Despite the distance, more than 80 participants were registered and traveled from countries as diverse as the Philippines, the UK, Iran, Australia, Myanmar, Germany, Japan, the U.S., Venezuela and Canada (to name just a few). Almost 40 contributions enriched the participants on the relationship between children’s spirituality and traditions. Jean-Philippe Perreault, Sandy Sasso and Bert Roebben offered us their specific expertise and views on the matter. The group was able to meet with local “practitioners” involved with children and concerned with spirituality. A panel helped us integrate the different highlights of the conference. The conference supported provocative and transformative thoughts presented not as problems but as challenges to meet. The importance to reinforce and sustain a community of practitioners and researchers on children’s spirituality was reiterated with conviction. What makes our association so special is not only the topic that unites us, but maybe most of all the spirituality and the relational qualities that each of us attempt to develop. How do we pass on the light? How do we face the different crises of our world concerning children? And how do we foster the dynamics of hope, not only in our milieus, but also among us, through sustained interdisciplinary and intercultural work? All these questions were raised from the participants that led them to express even more strongly the importance of cooperative work and research. Topics were suggested for future conferences: spirituality and children at risk, children’s spirituality in critical situations, children and boundaries – exploring the space between self and others, and children and hope. For the first time in almost twenty years, we are lacking a host for our next conference. We need to be creative in order to sustain and develop our network. It is the children who gathered us. And they still need us.
