August Fishing Special

Air and water temps aren’t the only things that are hot in August along our portion of the Texas coast. Anyone who has fished these waters for any period of time already know that. August often turns out being one of the more productive months of the year for speckled trout and redfish anglers, especially on days when low winds allow surf fishing, and on days when high winds dictate heading to the back lakes out on Matagorda Island.

If you’re looking for a great idea for a family outing before school starts, or if you’ve never thought of fishing during this time of the year, consider taking advantage of some great coastal fishing at some great rates. You’ll be glad you did! Contact us at (888) 677-4868 to book your August adventure now.

This year’s August Fishing Special rates are priced per guest and include 1-night of lodging, 3 meals, a full-day of guided fishing, and fish processing and packaging. Staying an extra night is an additional $175 per guest, and includes 1-night of lodging and 2 meals.

August Special Rates (cost of live bait is NOT included)

  • Party of 2 - $368 per guest
  • Party of 3 - $300 per guest
  • Party of 4 - $282 per guest

Bad weather policy: For a weather cancellation, a credit is automatically given for a future trip. Refunds are not granted for weather cancellations.

Mullet Watching

The sun is now peaking over the clouds along the morning horizon as you speed toward your first wading stop. As you near your destination, you catch a glimpse of the exposed top portion of a nearby oyster reef. It’s a long and irregular reef that winds its way along the adjacent shoreline, and there just happens to be pod upon pod of large horse mullet all around the reef. You’ve never paid much attention to this reef in the past, and therefore you might consider leaving it in your wake this morning. However, it seems as if your brain automatically slows the boat as your thoughts go directly to the pods of horse mullet, as you know their incredible action will attract the fish like seagulls to a cleaning table. You won’t be taunted any longer – it’s a spectacle not to be passed up.

You stop the boat, set the power pole, and you and your other three buddies quietly enter the water - two people on each side of the reef. You spend the next couple hours catching sturdy slot-reds on top water Super Spook Jr’s in what was later referred to by one your friends as being the most epic wading trip in their thirty years of fishing the Port O’Connor area.

That was quite a trip, indeed, but area anglers fishing the warm summer months don’t necessarily need to rely on locating schools of large mullet when looking for trout and redfish. These fish will be found both in size and numbers around area drains near sand and grass, or near open-bay shell reefs.

One successful tactic in these areas is finding a lone mullet jumping as it flees for its life. There’s something chasing it from below, so pay attention to it and try casting close by. Doing so has been known to produce some rather large summertime trout when practicing this maneuver over a sand and shell mixture. When implementing this practice on or near a shell reef, it’s important to target the small finger mullet that are sometimes positioned along the crown of the reef. Big trout travel up the drop off as they surge forward to attack their prey, so line up along the windward side (generally the deeper side) of the drop-off while working a plastic tail or suspending bait.
