Storm Front The 2019 St. John’s Red Storm Basketball Season

The 2019 season for St. John’s was filled with many highlights on the way to a 21 win season. Among these were a 12-0 start, winning the Legends Championship, wins against Top 25 teams such as Marquette and defending National Champions Villanova, and a return to the NCAA Tournament.

Non-conference play

St. John’s finished their 2019 non-conference schedule with an impressive 12-1 mark. That record included wins over Big Ten rival Rutgers, Georgia Tech out of the ACC, and beating Cal and VCU to take home the Legends Classic Championship.

Big East Basketball

St. John’s would register 8 victories in Big East play in 2019, including wins against Georgetown, Seton Hall, Villanova, Creighton, Marquette, Butler and DePaul in the opening round of the Big East Tournament.

Awards & Accolades

St. John's junior guard Shamorie Ponds was named to the 2019 All-Big East First Team, as well as the USBWA All-District Team, the NABC All-District Team and Honorable Mention All-American from the Associated Press.

Junior guard Justin Simon was named the 2019 Big East Defensive Player of the Year

Senior forward Marvin Clark II was selected to to participate in the 2019 Dos Equis 3x3 National Championship.

Junior guard Mustapha Heron was selected to play for USA Basketball in the Pan American games.

Sophomore forward L.J. Figueroa was selected to play for the Dominican Republic at the Pan American Games.

Two members of the 2019 Red Storm took significant steps towards continuing their basketball careers professionally. Shamorie Ponds reached an agreement with the Houston Rockets and Justin Simon with the Chicago Bulls for the NBA Summer League.
