The Worst Tragedy of the 2000's: 9/11 By katie McCluskey

The terrorist attacks that took place on September 11th, 2001 were the worst disaster of the 2000's

Explosion of the Twin Towers

The attacks were the worst for the following reasons:

1. The disaster was deliberate and by a terrorist group

2. It led more deaths in the War on Terror and conflicts between the US and the Middle East

3. It changed US travel and transportation forever and cost the US a massive amount of money

4. The aftermath has been the longest

US Troops in Afghanistan

1. The fact that the attack was deliberate poses a major security threat for the world because they is a terror group that seeks to harm and destroy the US

Fear around terrorist attacks has led to less trust in the world and worse relations with Middle Eastern countries

Tensions between Muslims and non-Muslims increased

2. The War on Terror, declared by President Bush as a direct result of the 9/11 attacks, resulted in US military troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan and other nations

6,845 Americans have died in Iraq and Afghanistan and over 900,000 Americans have been injured

More Iraqis, Afghanistanians and Palestinians have died from the war on terror as well, resulting in more than the causualities than the other disasters

3. The total direct cost of the 9/11 attacks was 3 trillion dollars

The TSA was formed and extreme security vetting is necessary for commercial airlines, which cost the US even more money

4. The aftermath of the attacks has been the longest because there is still fighting between the US and Middle East and there is still many people with illnesses due to carcinogens and debris

The 9/11 attacks were the worst disaster of the decade because they could potentially lead to more attacks by similar terrorist groups and the amount of lives lost in both the attacks themselves and the subsequent wars; as well as the length of the aftermath outnumbers any other tragedy. 9/11 is one of the most well known disasters in the history of the US and the world and it is so highly important because of the hatred that fueled it.
